Posted - 19 Feb 2004 : 07:04:55 Well, so an exciting time ahead for one little MuadDib, the artist formerly known as poor.
I haev heard some good news from the boss, about recompense for the extra hours I have been working and it looks like I might be able to afford to splash out on some things I 'like' as opposed to need.
I was thinking, largely inspired by Master Bookwyrm and the thread about beginning Pen and Paper, that I would like to get the DM Guide, and Player's Handbook and maybe some other basic resources, maybe some dice or that Dip Recipe ..
So my question is this. I was browsing Amazon, basically the only way I will have for buying the products, and there are a gajillion different books and such, and I have no idea which one to get.
Could anyone here please provide me with the exact name of the books im looking for?
Like DM Guide 3e or DM Guide 3.5e or whichever. am I looking for 3e or 3.5e and what else will I need?
I need a sort of starter kit for dummies if anyone knows what I mean. I know I wont be able to play, but at least I will have the stuff so I can read up and maybe actually participate in these forums a little more. Start formulating some questions, maybe make some characters, maybe even find some way to roleplay a campaign online. I just have some spare cash (why oh why did I leave home ) and would like to treat myself to a belated birthday gift with a starter kit.
Any help you can give would be greatly greatly appreciated. |

Oh I know...I was just saying that basically I wasn't too fond of those suggestions. Given the overall description of the actual 'Ghostwalk' itself, it sounds more like it belongs in a place well hidden away from the trials of everyday life in the Realms.

Posted - 25 Feb 2004 : 02:29:08 I'm not really sure about the city of Manifest being located in either Maztica or Lantan. I'd prefer to see such a place located within the Underdark, or at least deep beneath some of the more unknown dwarven realms...maybe the Deep Rift.
Oh and MuadDib, be sure to let us know what you think of the ruleset once you actually receive it...

Posted - 24 Feb 2004 : 10:16:19 Well, it is essentially a campaign setting. However, the area detailed is small enough that it can replace any remote area of most any campaign setting. As for the Realms, the suggestions are that it is part of Maztica of Lantan. |

Posted - 24 Feb 2004 : 09:34:56 On a similar note with the topic of this thread, I've been hearing that the Ghostwalk sourcebook is only a game option accessory and not a complete campaign setting in and of itself. Is this true?.
If it is, can it be brought into the Realms?. Where would the city of Manifest be located if it where based in Faerun?.

Posted - 19 Feb 2004 : 15:49:22 Yes, the FR tomes are what some would consider "optional", but I've only had one full-fledged D&D game, and that was just to get the hang of things. We've taken every other game into the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft settings. I would recommend the three core books, as everyone else said, but if you would like some knowledge about the Forgotten Realms and Faerun, I think you should purchase the FRCS or something like Faiths and Pantheons, Magic of Faerun, or somesuch. Well, that's my opinion anyways. |

Well to be totally up to date, and to have the smartest set of core manuals i'd say go for the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Gift Set - which contains the D&D 3.5 Dungeon Masters Guide, Players Handbook and Monster Manual
You basically need the above named manuals for a game of D&D (campaign setting aside), either 3rd edition or version 3.5
To go further back, you need the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition versions.... Its called the Monstrous Manual though in this case.
Rad's absolutely right MuadDib. Once you've purchased (and read through) the Gift Set of the three D&D rulebooks, you should have a fair idea of what you want to learn about next, or in which direction you want to take your campaign. Tomes like the Manual of the Planes, Oriental Adventures, Epic Level Handbook, and Savage Species are all 'game option' tomes. There mostly not necessary (with the possible exception of the Epic Level Handbook) to run a core D&D game...
In fact, excluding the actual campaign setting tomes, like the FRCS, and the DLCS, nearly every other accessory published by WotC is considered 'optional'...

Posted - 19 Feb 2004 : 08:19:11 What you need is: - DM guide 3.5 - Player's Handbook 3.5 - MM(MonsterManual) 3.5
You dont really need 3.5e, but thats what I think is best anyway.
