Wizards have posted an excerpt from the 'Introduction' of Ed Greenwood Presents: Elminster's Forgotten Realms. You can find it here.

Of particular interest, to me at least, is Ed's early breakdowns for the various parts of the continent. This is neat stuff!

This Barony is not too far west of Cormyr's most eastern border - the Sunrise Mountains (bcause Cormyr claims the Tunlands - another fairly hollow claim).

Not that that proves anything either way, but I find it interesting that their 'claimed' borders are actually fairly close.

Wow, I don't imagine the city states of the Chionthar are too happy about that.

I admit, I'm curious enough about this book that I plan to go check it out later today.

If it really is amazing and awesome and all that, I might even buy it. But we'll see. No more sight-unseen purchases for this girl.

I can't wait until the 16th so I can get a copy! :)

I think that Ed could have easily written a book with three times the page count...and still left me thirsting for more.

In it you will find BARELY any numbers so to speak...even the pay he cites for soldiers and such comes with a "This may be true today, but entirely wrong the next day" sort of feel in his writing.

In essence, it lights the fire in your head for many thousands of possible uses...while not nailing anything down as "IT MUST BE THIS WAY...SO SAYS THE GODS!" the way that Ed does best.

Some of the examples would be the early working diagram of the agents of the Zhentarim...that is only a snap-shot of any given day because it may very well change the next.

Elminster's Forgotten Realms is as good a template that allows a DM to move pieces around or simply disregard what he wishes...and yet also leaves more than ample room to add what you want in your own FR.

The best I can say is that it is more like Ed working with each individual DM to create any number of mirror worlds of Ed's own FR.

@Dalor - is there any other book you could compare this to? As in, type of content?

I will fully admit that I am chomping at the bit to get the chance to pick this book up. For a long time I just wanted an excuse to "reset" my interest in the Realms, and this seems to be the exact thing to do just that for me.
Caolin Posted - 09 Oct 2012 : 04:59:17
Does anyone know if they will be offering this up in an eBook format?
Seravin Posted - 09 Oct 2012 : 03:51:13

Fantastic.

For some reason I thought I was going to have to wait until November.

It was supposed to be released on the 16th this month...mine happened to come early for some reason.

Scribes tend to forget ‘Premiere stores’ get WotC items early. Of course I’m not saying a certain scribe is a store but it is cool that WotC thought you were one.

And for Mystra's sake BUY IT. Word from Ed is that if it sells well, there will be more ...
Actually, that was the word from the guy who makes such decisions, who was at the CK meet-up at Gencon. So that isn't so much a 'hope' as it is a promise. Their product line will now be based entirely on what sells (rather then what they want to sell, which seems to have been the 4e paradigm).

Maybe for the first time ever, the fans are literally 'steering the Realms'.

And we have a great captain this time out.

The only true review I can offer on this book is that it is indeed neutral regarding edition.

Splattered with notes originally sent to TSR by Ed, as well as later notes as well.

It gives a solid feel on many aspects of the FR that have changed my views on some things...and on Manshoon in particular...who is FAR from gone following the Manshoon wars...

Even the section on the gods was very informative, and gave lots of insight on many gods THOUGHT to be gone.

Ed spins a good yarn...but uses that yarn to create a tapestry of wonder. He gives a great many tips on solid gaming his style, but makes it so that you can take what you want and leave the rest of the cake behind if you like.

That's about the only review I can throw out...just read it and love it is all I can say!

I must've missed that. Which excerpt is it from?
Markustay Posted - 04 Oct 2012 : 20:16:36
The 'current clack' part interest me, but sadly, its a mere two pages.

I'd like it better if it were longer... MUCH longer. Like, the entire book.

'The Art' section also looks to be useful - Sage should especially enjoy that.
