I missed this gem back when it was published in Dragon, so I'm glad to have a chance to read it here. I'll be even more happy if I can ever find the rest of the Councilors and Kings trilogy and get back to the excellent story, but that's another matter entirely.

I know Halruaans look down on necromancers, so its interesting to read about them from the perspective of one that takes that path in the society. My underlying assumption was always that it would be the desperate and those that don't have any station to loose by learning necromancy, but it never occurred to me that someone that already had high station due to familial status might be tempted to take up the necromancer's art as well. It makes sense as presented now.

I like the way the flashback flowed into the present situation, so that we could see the function that Noor now follows in her family, as well as getting to see some of the gaps filled in such as why the Laraken was different than the larakens (I always thought the eels for hair thing was creepy, so seeing the progenitor of that side of things was welcome, if disturbing).

Plus, can you really fault Kiva for loosing it after what Akhlaur put her through?
