It's funny, when I first read the bit with Kheil being resurrected, I thought he was being reincarnated. I kept waiting for the "camera" to pull back and reveal satyr legs or whatever. I guess it's partly because I'm an old 2e hand and I'm not used to druids having the ability to cast raise dead. |

I'm reading this while on vacation in Vermont, and I'm enjoying it tremendously. I'll have more cogent things to say when I'm a little less relaxed, maybe, but for now, thought y'all might enjoy this. I had the book in my daypack as I took a hike around Montpelier yesterday. I climbed a trail up the hill behind the state capitol building, and completely unexpectedly, at the summit, I came across this.

Gotta give bonus points for creative use of cooking spices! Espically funny was Val, who was blinded and could barely breath, tell Berun repeatedly that he is going to kill him. Berun is just like whatever dude, I just kicked you three's asses with only spices!! |

Just finished ch 9 at lunch today and it was good to see Berun outsmart his captors, it looked like he might wait too long. I have a funny feeling that Sauk planned it that way though. Right before he leaves only 3 to guard Berun and Lewan his makes sure to drop a hint that one of the guards, Val, has something going on with Beruns old flame. It is like he is trying ti relight the fire and rage that Berun had in his former life as Kheil. But, it looks like Berun playing it so soft for so long has made Sauk underestimate him. |

I just picked this up at lunch--the first new FR paperback I've bought in years. I just wanted to comment on the gorgeous cover and design, which, to my taste, are a real step up from the fauxto-"realistic" character renderings the books featured when I was last buying them new back in the late eighties and early nineties. I also swung by a used book store and got the first book in Denning's Twilight Giant series, which seems to be set in a part of the Realms I never knew existed, and the first Erevis Cale book from the Sembia series since he seems to be the latest character that's really sunk his hooks into a big part of the fanbase. But I'm reading Sentinelspire first. |

Looks like we have another fine novel from Mark on our hands here! I loved Frostfell and was highly anticipating Mark's next work.
I am really enjoy it so far. The Prologue was a nice bit of forshadowing first with the rangers killing the assasain Kheil, then with their master bringing him back. I just did not expect him to be revealed so soon. I am eager to learn more about the old man in the mountain and Berun/Kheil's past with his daughter. |
