I picked up Libris Mortis cheap on E-bay and was having a think about the true necromancer PrC. It says that you need the Death domain to access it. What happens if you worship Myrkul (for example) and commence the PrC and then he goes and dies on you ToT-style? Putting aside the scenario that Kelemvor fills the gap and continues to grant you spells and access to the Death domain, could you continue on in the PrC if you lost acess to the Death domain (i.e. converted to worshipping Bane or even Mystra)? What happens if you've got your total 14 levels in the PrC and then Myrkul up and dies on you and you don't take Kelemvor as your patron deity? Would you have to burn a feat to get "Servant of the Fallen" to continue accessing the PrCs benefits or would you keep on getting them regardless?

Certainly not long term enjoyment, but could make for some interesting roleplaying.

It could be neat to bring in a high level priest from a dead god, to a group of lower level PCs. A cleric without any spells or the other special abilities, would make for a weak fighter (none of the bonus feats) fill in. This is heading off topic though. =)

Technically, they'd probably be screwed until they found a new deity. But, that doesn't make for much enjoyment of the game. I think you're solution works just fine.

I think technically according to the rules they'd be screwed and lose their class abilities. However, that's a quick way to lose a player, because he had no control over the deity dying. I'd probably have the player have some temporary problem accessing his powers and make him have to find some relic dedicated to the dead deity (in this case Myrkul). When I say class abilities, I explicitly mean those and not spellcasting. I'd still let the character have both his clerical and wizard casting ability for a very short term, but let him know he needed to "find the relic soon". Eventually, I'd probably discuss with him the need to either switch deities or take the "servant of the fallen" feat. For most players, it'd be a no brainer, but I can see some actually liking the concept of being "the last cleric of Myrkul" and he being the reason that "Myrkul's not totally dead yet".
Now, if it was an NPC... hell's yeah, I believe he's screwed if he doesn't meet his prestige class requirements. He better convert to Cyric or Kiaransalee or Orcus pretty quick, and later to Velsharoon. This would make for a really interesting issue if he's a main boss villain for you.

As much as it might seem like a cop out, I never punish players for events that happen outside of the game. If they worship a god and that god dies, I make sure to work some way into the story that doesn't force them to lose their powers.

Well, I'd probably convert to Velsharoon, although there would be some time between his upswing in worship and Myrkul's death. I thought that the True Necromancer PrC sounded a lot like his specialty priests from 2nd edition at any rate.

I know its a kind of "revisionist" thing, but for a while in between Myrkul and Kelemvor I'm almost certain that Cyric would have granted the Death domain, even though it doesn't officially state this in his current 3rd edition stats since he lost that domain to Kelemvor before domains were used to express a deities ability to grant "special" spells.

I do think that if you lost access to the Death domain that you would loose the ability to advance in the class, but I'd be inclined to say that you would keep your previous class abilities. I checked over the errata just to see if anything remotely like this came up, but it didn't.

Of course, I let a player that was a True Necromancer of Velsharoon redeem himself and retrain as a Mystic Theurge of Mystra, but that's a long, long story.
