I know that this most likely does not go in these shelves, but I have searched for a better location, and one could not be found. If it needs to be moved, please do so with my blessings.

So, over at Sorcerers by the Sea, I asked a couple of questions, and it seems that for the most part, there seems to be an infestation of trolls over there. Hmm, perhaps we should summon some of the fine folks of Nesme to go have a look at their defenses?

Anyway,m here is my question:

Does the spell Knock, allow a caster to bypass traps?

Here is an awesome SRD link to it:

Here is a link to my post regarding this:

I understand that it is not FR specific, however, this is a question that is haunting me and my studies...

Thank you for your assistance in advance,
Berwick

The trap is still activated, but it may not matter either way as the caster could be upto a distance away. Am I getting this right?

Yes that is correct as I would rule it, the poison needle is still there, but the spell caster does not have close and personal contact with the lock that a lock picker, using lock picks, faces.

As I said before it demands on what type of trap it is.
Also I have seen different interpertations of how knonk works, a gentle breeze opening the door or the lock just become unlocked. It might be situational depending on the type of trap it is. Shackles can be opened, perhaps they spring open perhaps they become unlocked and one needs to open them as an action.

I really appreciate your rapid response, and I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for clarifying this whole mess.

This more likely belongs in running the realms as my best guess.

IAE

If a look is trapped the knock spell bypasses the trap because the door opens, however if it is a trap that acts because the door is opened, preasure swith, crod attached, etc. the trap will activate. Of course the caster of the might not be in the area of effect as the spell is a ranged one.

Knock can defeat some traps on doors certainly not all of them it will depend on the type of trap construction used.

A poison pin to try to kill the theif when trying to pick the lock will be bypassed by the spell because the lock becomes unlocked and door open without touching the lock. If the trap is a water filled room the trap will still work when the door is opened.

If the trap is touch sensitive the spell will activate the trap but miss the caster if not standing directly in front of the door. A dart trap for example which would shoot darts into a 5 foot square (or some other area of effect) that the spell caster is not standing in.
