Anyone know any details about this product?

It's due for release in August and is by Richard Baker. Come on Rich, spill the beans

Again we attribute false motives to WotC... If WotC didn't want more games being released, they wouldn't have done the Open Gaming License for D20. Sure, it was a marketing move that only helped them out in the long run, but, at the same time, it expressly allows for the creation of other games.

its an idea basically to have fighters be ridiculous without having to be magic users or high level therefore it is kinda unbalanced and seems like a concept that should have been developed as its own game but we all know wotc would do anything in its power to stop more games from being released.

I looked at it too and thought it might have some potential. Of course I skipped Weapons of Legacy Tome of MAgic and Ran from the Magic of Incarnum. Of course I hadn't got that far into the book, it Was time to Leave borders and all that, when the wife calls...
Of course its hard to plunk down 29.95 plus tax for a book your not completly sure on.

Got a look at it today.

Very disappointing.
Just from the brief look that myself and the player in my group that has it did, nothing in the book is really useable with anything else.

Pretty much all the Feats require a character to have the Core Classes presented in the book.

Im afraid its going to be like Iron Heroes lite. I like Iron Heroes, if you are going to use it for your whole system, but doing it "half way" makes for an overly complex system. Either you end up giving your new martial characters too much power, or you streach their abilities too thin so that they aren't as useful as a good fighter or barbarian until they get much higher level.

Just my thought though.

I'm hoping the Tome of Battle with offer something for melee and martial characters other than "I hack at the darkness with my sword." Though at the same time I don't want it to be overly complex and extraneous, like many of the supplemental classes are. Yet, the information presented so far seems to indicate that it will be an entirely new set of mechanics, (reminds me of Incarnum), which may be difficult to integrate. Hopefully it will not end up as another set of Hexblades, Martials, and Spirit Shamans.

However, right now it seems very much like something out of wuxia films. Perhaps material I can mine for my own version of Kara-Tur. I can only hope.

Hmmm firstly I'd like to say not for me, I like combat to be 'stream-lined'. I don’t enjoy sitting trying to workout complex manoeuvres, but that’s not to say others don't. Recently we where playing a campaign and one player want to note every hit and miss and parry them (Weapon and shield specialisation CFH), personally I dislike this sort of thing I've always interpreted the combat rules to mean that your character managed a hit over several feigns, parries, ducking and diving etc. (Incidentally I prefer the parry rule from the DMG for this very reason)

CrennenFaerieBane- I actually find it somewhat worrying to look at 3E/3.5 sheet, I honestly start panicking! All those modifiers layout out like that. To be honest however I often write the individual modifiers in brackets on my 2nd E sheet so to be honest this fear is unfounded.

(I still cannot decide if 3E multiclassing is a good thing or not, while I do like it everyone, and I mean everyone NPCs included is multiclassed. But then that’s another discussion)

Well, some people will always look for a way to complicate the simple (2nd to 3E anyone?). And it will appeal to those who want to fine tune characters to make them into their perfect idealism of the character. Even though feats and skills allow this, some of these special abilities help it even more.

My humble opinion,

I read some of the blurb for this in the buyer's guide in the latest Dragon, and it sounds like its going to fall into the "Weapons of Legacy/Magic of Incarnum" Limbo for me.

The blub mentions that the book will have three new martial classes in it, and the point is that the classes can do some of the things traditional fighters do, but they learn certain diciplines in order to do the same thing, and might follow certain martial paths to determine what extra abilities related to combat they might follow.

It seems to catering to the esoteric, martial artist (in a broad sense) type warrior, but the vibe I got from the descriptions makes me think that maybe the new rules will basically take what is sometimes the charm of the martial classes, and make them a lot more complicated. Heck, one of my friends intentionally only plays rogues, fighters, or barbarians so that statistically he doesn't have to do much, he can just hit things and role play.

Has anyone else read that blurb, and what impression did you get if you did?

Well, the books did well back in the 2E days. Might as well rehash them, put some new interior art in them and load some players down with even more crunch!! Woohoo!!

Actually, they might not be all that bad, really. They do have potential, I just hope it's not wasted.

Apparently this particular tome is suppose to be about combat options that one can utilize in the game. After looking over next year's schedule and reading what some of the products are suppose to be, I'm starting to have 2e flashbacks (Tome of Magic=well, Tome of Magic, Tome of Battle=Player's Option Combat and Tactics, PHB II=Player's Option Skills and Powers). I'm not saying its good or bad, just that's what sprung to mind.

Yes, I know about Races of the Dragon-I can't wait for it. And yes, we get a Tome of Magic, detailing 3e core systems for Shadow, True Name, and Pact magic.

Anyone else getting Fred Saberhagen vibes for some reason?

Also, if they do an entire series of these, I'm going to kick them. We don't need another go round of the class books series or more alternate rules systems(I'm skipping Weapons of Legacy entirely, and hoping I might get to run an Incarnum game at some point-hell, I have enough problems with psionics.) ...I'd much rather they add a few more volumes to the Environment or Races series, or more Species books...

I don't know, but its probably marketed in the same line as the Tome of Magic book that is coming out.
