I'm looking to create a yuan-ti pureblood NPC. Races of Faerun has a pretty clear and detailed description of what is required if you want to play such a creature as a PC (6HD, 3 feats, ECL adj +11 etc.). In SK however, it tells you to look at the yuan-ti entry in the Monster Manual 3.5 (which I don't have) when building such an NPC. The one they do have in the book (Nhyris of Crown of Horns fame) seems different to the material given in RoF, specifically he only has 4 racial HD, different spell-like powers and a few other bits and pieces. Is the stuff in RoF for PCs only? If not, can I use it to build an NPC? Which is the 'correct' way to do this?

Id say those monsters are the ones TSR/WOTC created on their own. After all alot of the "Core" creatures are drawn from human mythology or from other sources ie Goblins, Trolls, Treants and Orcs

Sadly the Yuan-Ti is not part of the SRD as it is considered product identity.

From the SRD section on Legal Information:
The following items are designated Product Identity, as defined in Section 1(e) of the Open Game License Version 1.0a, and are subject to the conditions set forth in Section 7 of the OGL, and are not Open Content: Dungeons & Dragons, D&D, Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master, Monster Manual, d20 System, Wizards of the Coast, d20 (when used as a trademark), Forgotten Realms, Faerûn, proper names (including those used in the names of spells or items), places, Red Wizard of Thay, the City of Union, Heroic Domains of Ysgard, Ever-Changing Chaos of Limbo, Windswept Depths of Pandemonium, Infinite Layers of the Abyss, Tarterian Depths of Carceri, Gray Waste of Hades, Bleak Eternity of Gehenna, Nine Hells of Baator, Infernal Battlefield of Acheron, Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus, Peaceable Kingdoms of Arcadia, Seven Mounting Heavens of Celestia, Twin Paradises of Bytopia, Blessed Fields of Elysium, Wilderness of the Beastlands, Olympian Glades of Arborea, Concordant Domain of the Outlands, Sigil, Lady of Pain, Book of Exalted Deeds, Book of Vile Darkness, beholder, gauth, carrion crawler, tanar’ri, baatezu, displacer beast, githyanki, githzerai, mind flayer, illithid, umber hulk, yuan-ti.

George,

If you don't have the 3.5MM, why not check out one of the SRD (system reference document) files with the yuan-ti? You can find them on the d20 page at WotC or posted several other places. Should have upated yuan-ti in it.

One thing to remember Krash is that Races of Faerun is for all intents and purposes a 3.25E book just like Savage Species.

Both books came out right at the change over from 3.0E to 3.5E, and I just checked the 3.5 SRD, and the Yuan-ti are not listed .

Im pretty sure ROF is 3.0 while Serpent Kingdoms and Monster Manual 3.5 are the latest edition

This may explain the difference
