The PHB says that if you're riding a warhorse, you take up its back end. What if you want both you and your horse to charge in combat? Do you only get the benefits of the charge if you're using a weapon with reach (since the horse will have to stop once it's within striking distance of the enemy, putting you ten feet away from the enemy)? What if you have the Rideby Attack feat? With this feat, can your horse charge, attack, then move another five feet and still allow you to have the benefits of the charge?

Well mounted charge is designed with the idea of using a long pointed object (lance, spear, etc.) which are reach weapons and do more damage.

However one armed with a sword, mace, etc can still attack because there is no facing. In effect at end of the charge the horse can turn arround putting back to target. I know it does not make must sense comparded to a real charge, there again a real charge will not stop as soon as a foe is encountered.

Ride-by does not permit another attack it simple allows the ability to prevent foe from being within reach to attack mount or rider. Of course one can stop charge and still be in a threat area,

AoO of course will be posible should any occur.
