so... waaaaaay back in 3e, we have the celestial creature and fiendish creature templates, in MM1. fiendish creature can be applied to oozes, but celestial creature cannot. this injustice is supported in the online SRD, and it hasn't to my knowledge been changed in errata.

i'll admit that "celestial teratomorph" makes me chuckle, but so does "fiendish gelatinous cube" so i call it a draw. the point is that armies of fiendish oozes could appear in your local dungeons, unopposed, at any time, and... run amok.

i'm not trying to pick a fight, and i'm aware that i'm free to overlook things i disagree with, and for the moment i am disregarding it as an amusing oversight. i'm curious to hear any theories (or actual design decisions, if those are known) for why horned oozes are to be expected, but glowing golden oozes should oh-so-obviously never appear.

Nice. "Holy ----" would be a benediction in the church of Ghaunibleximb. Pretty brilliant name, btw.

Thanks. We can even work in that Ghauibleximb can overcome characters with a new damage type known as "stank damage". It renders a smell so foul that it causes the characters innards to spontaneously release from all available evacuation points, thus dehydrating its opponents to death.

Plus you've got Ghaunadar, Bwimb and Jubilex, but no Patron Saint of Slime.

I propose we create Ghaunibleximb, the rebellious offspring created after a night of drunken debauchery that neither Ghaunadar, Bwimb, or Jubilex like to speak of. Left to die at birth, this being was instead rescued and raised by celestial beings who then placed it at a tunnel section where all the celestial bath houses emptied. Allowed to live upon the waste of celestials, this holy ooze seeks to free its enslaved brethren from the abyss.

The 4E DDi Demonomicon article about Juiblex/Jubilex went in this sort of direction. It's worth a read (and I like the art).

It's just one of those weird Gygaxian things which are part of the D&D tradition. The 1E Monster Manual (I) presented Juiblex Abyssal Lord of Oozes, Slimes, and Jellies. Old Juiblex has since been updated many times across every game edition, his inclusion in the H4: The Throne of Bloodstone module means he's even (technically) entrenched in canon Realmslore, and subsequent descriptions in 2E Planescape lore developed him into a somewhat prominent fixture.

We know that Gygax invented things like green slime and gelatinous cubes, I suspect that explaining the presence of all these hungry dangerous creatures through a maleficent shapeless demon lord was the natural thing to do back in those simpler days. The concept behind Juiblex has always seemed somewhat cthonic to my mind, some sort of creature which originates from an impossibly distant time and place; I think it would be better to call him an immigrant from the Far Realms, perhaps an abomination from Limbo or Elemental Chaos. Celestials just don't generally tend to spawn monstrous incomprehensible beasts which dwell in dungeons and eat adventurers.

In my (non-canon) Realms campaign, the origins of Juiblex and Moander are intimately related and they might even be viewed as aspects of each other.

I dunno, how do you make a fiendish ooze in the first place? The only obvious theory is soaking it in a fiend's flesh/blood or unholy water until it gets a little funny itself.
With celestials, perhaps it works like antiseptic / Cure Disease?
Or when the golden glow kicks in, it works like some "sunlight" type spells that as a side effect UV-kill oozes, so once the effect is on, the poor thing have to either purge itself of the contaminated part or get burned to death?

-Hmm...Generally speaking, oozes are pretty mindless things that only really destroy (dissolve and digest whatever it is they come into contact with). Maybe that's why, since they primarily deal with destruction? Or something like that.

-It's weak, but it's better than nothing.

"Fiendish Gelatinous Cubes" are no joke my friend. I lost an uncle to one many moons ago...he didn't even see it coming.
