Greetings Everyone,

First off I wanted to thank all those who created this site, everyone involved in running and maintaining this site and to all who visit here. I'm having a blast exploring!

I've been lurking around the last few days and just wanted to say a personal hello to everyone. I hope to be visiting, and participating for a long time to come.

I have read about 75% of the novel's written about the Forgotten Realms. I just pickeup about another 25 books thru ebay and amazon, and am pleasantly working my way thru them. I've recently finished the Pools Tri., Lost Library of Cormanthry, Star of Cursrah, the Simbul's Gift and I've started in on Masquerade (it's been alot of fun reading about Alias and Dragonbait again), next on my list is City of Ravens due to the recommendations I read in one of the forums.

Question:
I do have a questions that I am hoping someone might have the answer to. In the return of the Archwizards series, what exactly is/was the sharn wall and who put it there?

Thank you to all who have read this.

Yes, welcome indeed.

The Sharn, eh? Well, they say that patience is a virtue - and one that is often rewarded. Hopefully more secrets of the sharn will be revealed in time to come.

Hope your stay here is long and enjoyable.

Well met, Kzia

Welcome to Candlekeep. My apologies for the lateness of my greeting. Ye must have slipped in through the front gates whilst my back was turned I see thou hast been greeted very well already and are already in discussions of Realmslore

And thank ye for the kind words, 'tis very much appeciated.

I hope ye enjoy thy stay herein. If I can be of any assistance, please just holler (just not too loud, this is a library afterall)

Arivia, You are a real sweetheart! Sage, Nice to meet you.

Thanks to you both. I might as well forget the wallet (probably no cash anyway!) and get my Visa, looks like its in for quite a workout.

I was doing some reading in the library earlier (what a lot of information gathered there!) I am going to head back and look for the archived material you mentioned, thanks again.

Oh, and Ed Greenwood has also discussed Mystra's Chosen on occasion in his personal scroll here at Candlekeep. But I'd recommend you take a look through the compiled archives, rather than the thread itself.

'Tis located here on the mainsite:- http://candlekeep.com/library/articles/so_saith_ed.htm

Well, you'll obviously want a copy of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, and then Magic of Faerun and Faiths and Pantheons are the best 3e sources, I suppose. As for older stuff, The Seven Sisters, The Magister, Secrets of the Magister, and whichever one of the 2e deity books dealt with Mystra are the best, IIRC.

The three 2e deity books (with an added fourth as I always say ). These being Faiths & Avatars (which Arivia alluded to above -- for the entry on Mystra), Powers & Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities. The fourth is Monster Mythology... and because it's a great PLANESCAPE resource (that works just as well with 2e FR) -- On Hallowed Ground.

For Mystra's Chosen, you'll also want the 2e Heroes' Lorebook. The 2e boxed set, Netheril: Empire of Magic also has some specifics on the sharn and phaerimm. 'Tis downloadable for free at the WotC site:- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

Arivia and Sleyvas,

Thanks for the information. I have only read the FR novels so far, I think I need to remedy that. Looks like the wallet will not be getting a rest after all!

Besides the three recommended ones, any other suggestions? I would particularly be interseted in any information on Mystra and her chosen.

Thanks so much everyone!

The Sharn wall was built by the Sharn. The Sharn are a very powerful but somewhat alien race of wizards. I'd have to relook them up, but the image in my mind reminds me of a flying, multiheaded creature with multiple limbs that's kind of insectlike. Basically, the phaerimm and sharn were at war and the sharn created the wall to keep the phaerimm holed up.
There are some hints that the sharn were a race of shapechanged netherese, but those same hints also tend to discredit the same belief. Other hints lead that the sharn may have been involved with the creator races (as in they may have been one of the factions).

The Sharn Wall was a mystical barrier raised by the sharn to imprison the phaerimm, who could neither move nor affect things outside of the wall. The beholder city of Ooltul was the major conduit for moving items into the Buried Realms(the name for the area enclosed by the Sharn Wall) until the Sharn Wall fell. Underdark, Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark, and Lost Empires of Faerun all contain more information.
