Greetings gentle sages and honourable masters of Faerun lore. I'm playing NWN in a Hardcore-rules Forgotten Realms server (perma-death, slow-leveling), and my task was always to be recognized as a good role-player. The problem is, that without knowing much about the Forgotten Realms I can never truly be a good role-player. I came to the conclusion that only players with FR lore can role-play a wise character who interacts intelligently in such settings. The only characters I can RP successfully are the comical-ignorant sort, which I'm getting sick of.
I mean, I'm sure you guys would rule on that server, but I'm personally not sure if I want to learn all that much for a server. And there's a lot to learn after all (which I'm sure you can attest to!) The problem is that this server is one of kind (in terms of technical settings), so I really want to stay there and be recognized as a good role-player without having to play a dumb character and without having to learn about the FR. This is my paradox.
If you have any advise or thoughts about my paradox please share them. I would appreciate anything.

To act as your character is a given, but to be a good role-player you need skill and knowledge. I agree that knowledge about one's environment is more important than any external knowledge, but it's always those that has both who are on the top. They have better understanding of things, more stuff to talk about, more general lore to spread and stories to tell... etc. Anyway, I assure you the players are not the problem, and the server is the only one that caters to my Hardcore role-playing needs, so I'm gonna have to bear with that. I did found your post encouraging nevertheless.
It's called HAZE for the one who asked - http://haze.1d4.org/forums/index.php , but they're working on a new project called "Penitence" at the moment - also FR. Currently the concept is having your character washed to an isle with no way out (deadly waves). |

The players you might be encountering might be the problem.
To be a good role player you need to act your character. There are millions of NPCs that never heard of the Seven Sisters, there are some that never heard a bard or know what a Harper is.
If you want to stay there to prove your playing skills you should learn one location. Secomber for example. As you travel from there to Never Winter act as an explorer. Asking questions does not mean you are dumb. Your character will of course learn things from the interaction that you as a player will have to remember.
Even if that server requires that one be born in Never Winter one can be born of the farm and still ask questions as one travels about. Be your character. Avoid bard class because they should know lore.
If this does not work find another server. Sometimes the problem is the elitistism of long term players that is the problem. |
