It seems that the Worlds of DnD site has been hacked by someone calling themselves the Red Devil Crew. Am I the only one seeing this?

While that's true... we probably would not like the results . The "blood" of demons and devils often changes the nature of those who are exposed to it... even ancient vampire lords who are obsessed with wearing black capes and showing their canines while wallowing away in dark and forboding castles on hills... ... Not that we know anyone like that of course...

I miss all the good stuff. Can't believe these hackers made it past you Strahd. Even devils have blood for you to suck, right? I've been browsing for the last hour and didn't even know anything happened until I happened upon this post.
Good to see things are back to normal and the Keep bypassed this event.

I did not know what the greyhawkonline system was until you mentioned it. So the answer to that is no.

I think it has more to do with the forum software which is used, and the fact that it is written in PHP. Which until recently has led to some serious security holes.

Hopefully now, all the fortifications are in place to prevent this from happening in the near future. Obviously we are never all safe as long as there are groups like these 'Red Devils' out there!

Regards

Because there's just too many sites about cute fluffy critters for them to target?

I try to stay away from walks in the park, during the morning, for fear of catching fire and meeting my doom!

Well I have had about 3 hours sleep since it all started, and now I am nearing the end.

Thanks for your support guys!

Thanks for sharing that bit of info... I was wondering whether or not I should run a virus scan, or wait until the next scheduled one in a couple days. I did run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, and they found the usual bits of evil, but nothing that appeared to be unusual and/or from the hackers.

Here's some more useful info...

Be sure that those bots are protected themselves. What a lot of people don't actually realise when using Spybots, is that there are a variety of specialised and particularly nasty viruses out there that are coded to be attracted to certain parts of a bot's program... The very method you're using to destroy unwanted intruders could be the only way some other unwanted nasties are worming their way in... Please ensure that your bots are always distributed from reliable sources, and try to avoid download quick fix programs that can sometimes "pop up" on your screen.

Once more we have triumphed over these beats who try to put an end to Candlekeep and Worlds of D&D.

Through many hours of toiling I have managed to restore the forum, back to the point where it was taken down last night.

Before I open up the portal I aim on doing some more maintenance which will upgrade the board and hopefully plug any security holes.

Just give me a little while longer, and we will be back in business!

Regards

I didn't think it was going to be necessary, but I knew it wouldn't hurt. It had been about week since I ran those programs, anyway...

Ah, good. I rather dislike gremlins. Pesky little things, always getting into places you didn't know existed.

Well met

Worry ye not, Bookwyrm, the walls and gates are fortified and precautions taken, following the last gremlin army invasion.

It seems I've escaped from the mists of worlds for a short while, may the Dark Powers rot the red devil crew
Alaundo Posted - 24 Dec 2004 : 08:36:07

I am greatly shocked and disturbed by this. I found a scroll upon my desk this morn from Strahd informing me of what had transpired, and indeed, when I swung open the doors to Worlds, there was but a void

However, i'm sure not all is lost, I believe Strahd may a fair amount of the scrolls hidden in the archives of Castle Ravenloft

Bookwyrm Posted - 24 Dec 2004 : 06:51:02
. . . . which is more difficult than it seemed. Seems a simple copy and paste I mean anamuensis spell doesn't work completely . . . .
Bookwyrm Posted - 24 Dec 2004 : 06:42:56

[::The Bookwyrm begins searching through a bag of holding::]

Let's see . . . a staff of ping flooding . . . hmm, dust of denial of service, that'll be good . . . . scroll of trace home ISP . . . oooh, a wand of zombie control, that would be nice.

Now if only I had these on my class list, I could do something!

I suppose I'll have to settle for donating some files of restoration from my cashe.

This 'Red Devil Crew' should be banished back to the layers of the Nine Hells from wence they came. We do not target their bastions, so why should they ours? All the best so that Worlds may rise again.

Alas Melfius, it is true.

The worldly domain has suffered an attack, and this so called Red Devils Crew have not only hacked in and changed the opening page to the site, but they have also deleted EVERY file that was there too.

I know for some people here, it is not going to be much of a loss, but for those dedicated to coming over for the past 6 months I can imagine it is a shock!

How someone like this group could, and would do something like this is unbelievable.

I have contacted the hosting company to see if we can track them down, and maybe restore the site.

I will report back here with any news!

Thanks again for those who have supported the site!

This is most distresssing indeed. I am not a happy Sage . Apparently though, if this can even be considered a good thing... , Worlds of D&D was no the only forum hit by these devils. It appears to be a concerted effort to strike at a number of other D&D message boards.

I wish the hosting company the luck of Lady Tymora in their pursuit of these miscreants... and hope that the justice delivered to them will be... swift and final .

Well, as long as the hosting server does a daily backup (as they should!) hopefully they won't have lost all the data.

Fingers crossed!

Not all places that host forums do that... On another forum I'm part of, The Great Server Crash of 2003 cost me about 80 posts made over a period of about 3 or 4 months...

It seriously sucks that someone saw fit to ruin the fun of many other people, just to show their skill...

It's called children, which is what they are no matter their age.

Good luck with restoring the site.

Sorry to hear that, Strahd. If there is anything I can do to help (not that it is much, I know) I'd be willing to help.

I sent one to Alaundo. I think I remember seeing he was a moderator there. I just registered there yesterday, so I am not totally familiar with the moderators.

Thanks!
