I am sure all of you have heard of the Red Wizards. I was curious about a few things concerning them.

I was creating some Red Wizards for my Story and I realized that I didn't know if Thayan Wizards were REQUIRED to have the prestige Class Red Wizard to be considered a Red Wizard? (Thats a lot of Red Wizardry)

Also would Sorcerer and Warlock classes be viable choices for a Red Wizard? I tend to think that warlocks with all their Demon pacts ect.. would make good wizards under the zulkir of Conjuration or something or is it a requirement that they be able to read/scribe scrolls ect..

Thanks in Advanced As Always.

Good point Sleyvas.

>>But being a rival of Ssass Tam makes it quite possible that "of Thay" is the same >>as "thayan".

Or that he's upset with the house of Tam, because they became the Zulkirs of Necromancy. Keep in mind that Velsharoon predates the founding of the rulership by schools of magic. In fact, he predates the formation of the country of Thay.... so he can't be "of Thay"... or rather he can be just as much as George Washington was equally an English citizen and ultimately and American citizen.

if you look into the obscure lore it certainly spells between the lines that Velsharoon aren't Thayan of birth, but some other mageocraty, prehaps Halruaa

Yeah, but "of Thay" is often part of the name for the Red Wizards. It says "renegade Red Wizard of Thay" (referring to the group), not Velsharoon of Thay, a renegade Red Wizard.

But these other rivals are no Red Wizards.

i'm possitive that there are several rivalships across borders and nationalities within the Realms

Ah, now THAT brings a little difference to the puzzle. Velsharoon is/was a renegade "red wizard", but there's nothing so far that has said that he was a THAYAN red wizard.

"As a mortal, Velsharoon was a renegade Red Wizard of Thay whose chief rival was Szass Tam ..."

Ah, now THAT brings a little difference to the puzzle. Velsharoon is/was a renegade "red wizard", but there's nothing so far that has said that he was a THAYAN red wizard. Also, there's nothing that says he ever supported the current hierarchy with Zulkirs and such. Ever since 1st edition, its been rumored that the "red wizards" were originally founded in Halruaa, but they were kicked out for performing forbidden research. The latest Shining South even has a history bullet for 827 DR (before Thay was formed) that "the wizard Omm Hlandrar engages a red wizard by the name of Velsharoon in a spectacular magical battle in the skies over the Shaar. The contest ends in a draw".
So, this being said, you could have RENEGADE red wizards who are warlocks and sorcerors. They just wouldn't exist within Thay's existing power structure. As another example, Zhengyi the Witch King of Vaasa was introduced as formerly having been involved with the red wizards. Its my firm belief that Zhengyi too was a renegade red wizard who was forced to the side when the war to establish the rule by Zulkir occurred.

According to Powers & Pantheons, it was at the end of 1368 -- so it was a decade after the Time of Troubles.

A specialist wizard/red wizard/warlock multiclass could probably work allright though.
sleyvas Posted - 07 Sep 2007 : 16:32:24
Technically, yes, they are required to take the red wizard prestige class to be a red wizard. In my Thay, SOME wizards have been allotted the robes without entering the prestige class, but it was pretty much only after proving their loyalty and their power. They still had to take the tattoo focus though.

Sorceror does not fit the Thayan mindset, because you don't earn it. Warlocks would be considered "demons little whipping boys" by Thayans, because again they're just pulling their power from another source. Never forget that at the core of the formation for Thay was the right to perform magical research and study.
