Posted - 22 Aug 2007 : 04:56:13 So in the recent 4e talk, I've seen reference to changes in Realsmlore as the editions of D&D have changed. Not having seen these happen in real time (I played a little a couple years after 2e hit and not again until after 3.5), I'm curious as to what these changes were.
So, can you tell me what changed in the transitions?
1e to 2e: I know this was related to the ToT, but was it just the changes in the pantheons or was there more?
2e to 3e: What got retconned?
Of course, we'll have to wait to see about 3e to 4e, but I'm just curious if the wise scribes and sages here can give me a little history. Thanks in advance! |

Posted - 23 Aug 2007 : 03:20:46 But our own Markustay did an excellent job of reworking everything in Erlkazar to make it fit in the 3rd edition map scheme, and you can find the map in the Map Room, here:

Posted - 22 Aug 2007 : 16:37:29 Erlkazar experienced some changes. I'll let Steven Schend explain -
"Re: places: a novel free zone erlkazar No, it's still there, whether or not it gets acknowledged on the map or in the Lands of Intrigue listing in the FRCS. At least it's still there in my mind. They just crunched it all into smaller space (and I wasn't around or paying attention when they did this with the main maps of Faerun, so I don't even know the logic or explanation behind the changes). Just remember that world maps for our own world changed multitudinous times over the centuries, so I'd say use whatever maps make you happiest with the Realms and be done with the rest. Steven It is never too late to be what you might have been. (George Elliot/Mary Ann Evans)
Chalk it up to Sembian mapmakers or something to overlook their existence, that's all."
...
The fact that Erlkazar was the featured setting of Master of Chains tells me WotC have at least kept most of the parts they've removed ready for [potential] inclusion in a future sourcebook that may focus on this particular region of the Realms. In other words... Erlkazar's still in the Realms, we've just not seen it properly marked on any 3e maps.

There was some Iltzakar material, and novels, that was published but most of that nation was removed in the 3e maps if you compare it to the 2e maps, especially from the Calimshan box set. |

Mostly it was "empty" and therefore "uninteresting" areas such as parts of the Western Heartlands and the Shaar. In other words wilderness and humanoid lands. As I generally use the Western Heartlands I was not pleased when I saw this. |

Posted - 22 Aug 2007 : 07:45:14 There is of course also the map changes between 2nd and 3rd editions, where large areas were cut from the map.
In between editions on also has the monks which go out with 2ed, only to re-appear at the end of the edition.
Other details are things like changes done with the elves; the emergence of the Wood-elves, a subgroup new to 3ed. and the overhaul of the halflings in 3ed. |

Posted - 22 Aug 2007 : 06:55:22 From 2e to 3e, the cosmology broke apart, and the planes of Toril sundered itself from the Great Wheel to form the Great Tree,* as described here under point "D". Of course, so the cosmology has been for ever since the creation, and there has been nothing else as the Great Tree ever ...
* Sounds like one of elfen high magic's spells which did more than intended. |

Posted - 22 Aug 2007 : 05:56:17 Re: assassins
This was the result of a retcon. In the FRCS, on pg. 264, it states that only the assassins that worshipped Bhaal were killed, and thus, not ALL assassins were eradicated during the demise of Bhaal. Additionally, it is important to note that only those characters in the Realms who had the assassin class would've actually died [which means any unstatted characters before this time could have easily survived the event].

I believe Mystra's death and rebirth was also the explanation for the change from 1e's "magic-users and illusionists" to 2e's standardized Mage class.
Assassins and cavaliers disappeared, too. |
