I was wondering if anyone could give me some idea as to why the Asperi (MM 2) was originally printed for FR and how it fits for FR (Lore wise).

P.S - I May also post more monsters, mainly becuase im trying to update that particular book because i have noticed several people talking about wanting an updated version

It has the following sentance listed in the entry under MM2. "Unlike typical horses, asperis are intelligent magical beasts. The live in the permanent cold of remote mountain peaks, where they gallop across the glaciers and through the frigid skies." And as Ed was the creator I would think they would live from the Spine of the World all the way to the Icerim Mountains.

Thanks all for the Info, but does anyone happen to have an Idea where they might be most commonly found... I have the old 2e card for them but its in storage and buried... so getting it is a problem.

Also, in 2nd edition, one of the major things that would make a character want an asperii as opposed to a griffon or pegasus was that asperii mounts were stable enough that spellcasters could cast from their backs while mounted. With that just requiring a riding & concentration check now, its not noted as much.

Go thee to a nunnery instead. They could probably use some excitement.

Kajehase - who feels like he had a river thrown on him during work today.

And in published Realmslore, they do have a couple of appearances. Garnet rode one around in Elfsong. In the AD&D comic, Kyriani was friends/lovers with this guy who led a band of asperii-riding guys.

See also Book of Lairs, Elves of Evermeet, The Horde boxed set, and Pirates of Fallen Stars for other notable asperii references in the Realmslore.

No, Ed actually DID create the Asperii. I've seen his photocopies of the original article submission, illustration and all. Not that the concept of a flying steed was new; mythology has given us that for centuries. What Ed needed was aerial steeds that weren't pegasi with all of the existing game details. He needed them for an adventure in which the Company of Crazed Venturers were hot on the trail of galloping fugitives whose mounts simply "took off" up into the air once (they believed) they were out of sight of all pursuers.
There you go. More potted Realmslore.
love to all,

The asperii wasn't created for the Realms, though it first appeared in a "Creature Catalog" feature (in Dragon #89) alongside a lot of Ed Greenwood monsters. It was reprinted in the MC3 Monstrous Compendium appendix alongside other creatures not otherwise particularly tied to the Realms. I don't have MC3 to hand, but I don't recall much Realmslore there.

Scattered references tell us that asperii
-- are associated with Aerdrie Faenya, and are sometimes ridden as flying mounts by elves
-- were supposedly part of an old magical kingdom above the Stonelands
-- occasionally visit Umbergoth in Aglarond

I don't have access to my books right now, but the Asperi ( that is, unless I am mixing creatures here. We are talking about the Windsteed are we not?)has been a part of the Realms from the days of the 2ed. There has not been to much information on the creature though and I am unsure who created them and for which purpose.
