Admittedly I haven't read the Avatar Trilogy for many many years but I don't remember Shar appearing the guise of Selune as described on page 12 of The City of Splendors: Waterdeep.

Can anyone refresh my memory or clarify what happened?

I knew that many of the characters, such as Kyriani, have been brought to the game material, but I was not sure if the comic was considered canon. Thanks.

From Steven himself -

"As the guy who used to be the liaison and approvals guy for TSR and the AD&D comic with Kim Yale (may she rest in peace) at DC, I can say unequivocally that the events and characters are all canonical.

Steven
who also led the charge to move the characters into the game material as well..."

And Steven Schend made a point of putting stuff from the AD&D comics into his material... Up to and including the character Kyriani, who is now a Lord of Waterdeep.

Yes, since many of the references, and NPCs, have appeared in sourcebooks.

Selūne was hanging out in Waterdeep, using the name Luna and tending the bar at Selūne's Smile in the Dock Ward. Some of her friends knew she was Selūne, but not all of them. So they were all kind of surprised when the ToT kicked off and Selūne made a very public appearance at her temple. Luna, in particular, was quite surprised.

Trying to investigate, she was captured, and was brainwashed into believing that the imposter was the real Selūne. Her friends came to rescue her, and a big fight broke out. During the fight, it was revealed that Luna was the real Selūne, and the imposter was Shar. Her plot revealed, Shar decided to bug out.

This was all in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons comic, published by DC and TSR. I want to say it was issues 19-23, but I could be mistaken.
