I'm busy reading Master of Chains and while checking on the background in LoI, I noticed that the map on page 4 does not correspond with the latest Faerūn map at all. It seems the Snowflake Mountains have moved south. What was the Snowflake Mountains is now the Giant's Run Mountains (where a large part of the book also plays out), and what used to be the Kuldins is now the Snowflake Mountains. Does that mean that Spirit Soaring has also moved? All of the roads, tracks, woodlands and rivers are still the same, including The Deepwash, Shalane Lake and Impresk Lake. Why this oddity? |

The fact that Erlkazar was the featured setting of Master of Chains tells me WotC have at least kept most of the parts they've removed ready for [potential] inclusion in a future sourcebook that may focus on this particular region of the Realms.
In other words... Erlkazar's still in the Realms, we've just not seen it properly marked on any 3e maps.

However, for a out of game explanation, yes WOTC, when they redid the map, basically removed most of that nation. |

It was one of the "realms" to experience changes in location between editions. I'll let Steven Schend explain -

No, it's still there, whether or not it gets acknowledged on the map or in the Lands of Intrigue listing in the FRCS.
At least it's still there in my mind. They just crunched it all into smaller space (and I wasn't around or paying attention when they did this with the main maps of Faerun, so I don't even know the logic or explanation behind the changes).
Just remember that world maps for our own world changed multitudinous times over the centuries, so I'd say use whatever maps make you happiest with the Realms and be done with the rest.
