Please, I really need your help! I'm translating the Icewind dale trilogy and really need to know whether Gwehwyvar is male or female? I've gone and corrected the whole Crystal Shard and really don't want to find myself doing the same with Streams of silever, you know;) (And in my language I cannot call it 'it' - it has to be either she or he:)
Plus, what's the real name after all, Tempos or Tempus? and does it make any difference? Please, I really need this now! Thanks:) |

TEMPUS'S entry in Faiths and Avatars, under Aliases lists the name TEMPOS (among the barbarians of Icewind Dale). This also lends credence to mournblade94's evidence.

This is nothing like the mithral/mithril thing. They acknowledge (i.e. Canonized) the Tempus/Tempos thing, whether it originated with a typo or not. |

It was my understanding that Tempos was the name the ICEWIND DALE BARBARIANS used to call Tempus. It sounds like you are probably correct bookwyrm, but I find it hard to believe that the editor would miss this.
I vaguely remember it mentioned in the Crystal Shard that Tempos was the Barbarian name for TEMPUS.

Perhaps you misunderstood -- what I am suggesting is that Salvatore spelled it with an O for the whole manuscript. The editor told him that it was with a U. So someone (perhaps the author) goes through and tries to change every single one. Unfortunately, they weren't able to catch them all. (That's one of the many reasons I prefer writing on the computer. 'Global Search and Replace' is such a useful command.)
Anyway, that's my idea. |

Well it does sound much better with an 'o' in my language so it's not a problem and doesn't make much of a difference...I just think that authors should believe in the world and people they create, which can be hard if you cannot remember their names for more than a book;)
Sorry, guys, no offence meant, it's just that I'm a prfectionist and sometimes tend to forget that people differ in their attitudes towards their work:) |

You have to give him some leeway, you know -- it was Salvatore's first book to be published, if I'm not mistaken. Certainly it was his first book in the Forgotten Realms.
The Tempos/Tempus quandry, by the way, was actually his fault. Just something that no one caught, since anyone reading it (including editors) would have known what he was refering to at a glance. It's just one of those things. The human mind looks for patterns first, specifics later (incidentally, that's why camouflage and facepaint works), so a difference of one letter wouldn't have stood out that much. For the purposes of translating, you can leave it at the more widely used 'Tempus' if you prefer. |

OK, if you say so...but still it is sort of strange when you come across such things (for the first time at least), especially if it's one and the same character who uses the different names. And also the cat, it was definitely an 'it' throughout the Crystal Shard and then all of a sudden it turned into a 'she' and to my mind it was more of a 'he' (and still is...:)) But you know, I've never read anything by Salvatore before I started translating this book...
Ahh, when I think of Tolkien who would get up at night to watch the moon phases and then go and check if the phases in his book were ok. As another great poet said 'truth is beauty, beauty - truth'....... |

As I said before, in some cases it is a regional issue. Take Oghma for example. In Durpar, he is called Curna and is worshipped as the Goddess of Wisdom - part of the Adama, the Durparian concept of a world spirit that embraces and enfolds the divine essence that is part of all beings.

Though it's a bit strange that Wulfgar himself one day calls his god Tempos and next time you hear from him, it's already Tempus..he must be very fickle or something...or maybe just catches foreign accents quite easily;) |

Well, as for the correct name of TEMPUS or TEMPOS, that is largely a regional issue. Most worshipper's of Faerun call him TEMPUS, however, in some regions of Faerun he is called TEMPOS, as was evident in several books and CRPG's. In the end it makes no difference as all manifestations are the same deity.
And as for Guen, IT is a she-panther.
