Hellow you all, i'm new to the whole role playing game AD&D. Soon i'm going to play with a couple of friends. We already got a DM with lot's of experience but can anybody tell me wich books i can read about the realms that can get me ( and my character) familiar with the surroundings?

Races of Faerūn is indeed a good book. It gives a good look on the ethics of humans and the cultural differences. I can borrow him you if you want to take a look in it. Volo's Guide to the Dalelands is a free download (if I'm correct) on the official website of wizard of the coast.
btw: if you gonna buy the PHB this week be sure it it 3.5 edition

Volo's Guide to the Dalelands is always worth a look. If you plan on being in and around Shadowdale then the product of that name from the 2E boxed set is certainly useful. There's little in the way of 3E material on the Dales, but from what I gather Eric Boyd's article in the current edition of Dragon magazine could prove very useful.
As for 3E products, Races of Faerūn is a personal favourite and useful wherever you play your campaign. |

OK, starting location will be the town of Freedale in the vicinity of Shadowdale. Freedale was mentioned in the introduction to AD&D boxed set years ago. |

For the moment i'm busy reading the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting, and as boddyknock said, i have no idea of where we'd start the campaign... As soon as i know, i'll post it here ! ! !

Welcome in Candlekeep my dear Cousin,
After an absence of 10 years it's nice to see you back in the splendid world of Faerün. I remember the begin days of my (a)D²D career where we played in the garden of my house. The hot sun rays on our back and the f*ck*ng wind blowing our papers in the grass are moments that I will not forget So people ...Elander is not so "new" as he told, he had a lil' bit experience with the game 
Because I'm bussy leading another group I don't have an exact idea where I will start the campaign right now, but I will think about it and will let it know so soon as possible.
and no !!! you paladin can't start with a baby-dragon |

Welcome Elander! I would suggest speaking with your DM about where in the Realms the campaign will take place and starting form there. It may be easier for you to focus on a specific region at first. Let us know where the campaign will take place and we can point you to the regional sourcebooks that will server you best. Aside from that, the 3ed Campaign Setting is a great place to start. |

Jorkens gives good advice here. This tome in question (details here) is highly recommended. Ye can also find many other useful tomes listed on our products page, which may gain thy interest.

Well, the 3ed. Campaign-setting would be your best start. After that its much up to what you are curious about as there are more than enough books to choose from.
Now, if you go to the Wizards of the Coast downloads page (link O'Hamster of the thousand tricks?)you will find several Realms products available for free. These are for the 2ed. but the lore is as valid as ever. Bare in mind that this is centered on specific lands and regions, the campaign-setting gives the best overview.
