Hi all,

Lately there seems to be some doom and gloom on the site, tales of things going wrong in the world. This ranges from people talking about lack of new products, the state of shops around them (which now contain very little RPG materials), to the most recent disturbing news that Gencon is to be no more in Europe.

Is this the begining of the demise of roleplaying? It seems to have started when Hasbro took over WotC. Since that time we have certainly seen a decline in the games of which we love so much.

Years back we watched the other campaign worlds dissapear bit by bit. We watch the mighty Dragonlance dissapear of the release schedule until all we were left with were a scant collection of novels. This seems to be the case with FR products as of late.

I certainly hope I am wrong.

Any thoughts?

Will FR ever die? Maybe. Will fantasy Roleplaying? Never. There are too many of us who will buy these products for whoever is making them to completely stop. Besides, hasn't WoTC already licensed out the D20 line? I've seen just a flood of D20 products out there, and not all by WoTC. Actually, some of them are giving the official releases a run for their money in quality. With all of those products, even if the 'official FR' died out, there would be plenty of material to continue it on in our own imagination. I would be one sad individual if the official stuff ever stopped being made, but it sure wouldn't prevent me from making up my own things.

The end? Hardly. Simply the omens of a changing of the guard. For nigh on three decades D&D has endured, begining with TSr, their near collapse, purchase by Wizards of the Coast, and the purchase of Wizards of the Coast by Hasbro. Now, what does this mean for Wizards and D&D? If Hasbro does terminate D&D it will simply pass to the hands of another (otherwise the Hasbro headquarters will be letter bombed, I assure you), or perhaps into public domain, either why, it will not die. The current period of ownership has seen D&D pass from (pardon my geek-ness showing here) Windows to Linux (anyone who knows about GNU should get this). Needless to say, whether or not Hasbro terminates, or at least heavily scales back D&D, it will continue to exist, in all it's glory, and no one, Hasbro, the U.S. Government, or God (okay, maybe God could) can stop the rolepayers of the world. In the words of Bill Gates, "Resistance in futile, you will be assimilated...".

On the bright side of things, look at HACKMASTER. Kenzer bought the rights to first ed D&D, and is publishing that game, though with a comic edge. And look at ICE. Rolemaster is back because fans bought the rights. SO is spacemaster.

There are a HUGE amount of companies publishing material for D&D. The worst thing that could happen is HASBRO not selling the rights if it ever fails. But obviously there is enough fanbase to keep the hobby alive.

Honestly if FR folded, I would do WHATEVER I wanted on my campaign since I knew there would be no published material to counter it. I don't WANT it too happen, but if it did I would survive. If D&D shut down they cannot come to my house and take MY books, or MY ideas. EVEN if ROLEPLAYING PUBLSHING stopped all together, I would still have all my material from 1st through third ed, so my friends and I at least would still have fun. And I am sure all of you would too. They cannot take away your imagination, and there is plenty of creativity to expand on EVERYTHING.

I have to so agree with blade.... Sinc ethe take over .. things have gone down hill .. the only thing that is still good that has nothing to do with that company is AEG... they make SOME good things. Not everything is that good though. But I am sure that people will manage. As long as the basics of the game are not warped that is. I think Blade has a very good point. One I like infact.

I agree! Hasbro have caused nothing but damage to D&D!
Ok so maybe TSR had too much on, too many products in too many campaigns, but i guess they were just trying to please everyone and have a campaign that suited 99% of the RPG population.
WotC have produced some really good products, the quality of FR products and D&D in general is quite impressive.....although there is not enough! Compared to the release schedules of other RPG companies, they are probably the lowest in terms of the number of releases per year.
I would not be surprised to see the end of FR...in fact, id probably welcome it! Now before you all jump on me brandishing clubs, i think it might be for the best..... so long as WotC release the FR brand for purchase by another company....... look at Ravenloft.... White Wolf have resurrected the campaign and done wonders! Dragonlance is making a come back this year too and its just what the fans needed!!!!
