Posted - 24 Feb 2007 : 02:39:43 I think that niche is met right now by NWN1 and 2 persistent world gaming, to a great extent. It's fan generated, so a gameworld can be as roleplay-intensive as one wishes. You do need to understand some basic game mechanics to play, but that's true of any game. It's nowhere near as involved as learning tabletop PnP, not even close.
I have to say though, I have recently become a big fan of Play by Post gaming. It allows players to use their imaginmations very much as in tabletop, yet it's not necessary to master a lot of complicated rules in order to play. The DM handles all the rules and dice rolling, etc. |

Posted - 23 Feb 2007 : 23:08:01 Someone with lots of vision and lots of money needs to find a way to integrate into the RPG culture and industry the many people who roleplay outside of traditional tabletop RPGs and are either unfamiliar with them or put off by the self-pertuating overcomplex rules and insular 'gamer' culture. |

Posted - 23 Feb 2007 : 19:05:24 Take a look here at Exodus's Play by Post Game forum in which we recently just started a game set in Amn. Most of our community's roleplaying experience comes either from Neverwinter Nights persistent worlds or tabletop PnP, and nearly all of our players in the game are new to the PbP format. There are a number of helpful threads in the forum pertaining to what the play style is like, resources for PbP play, etc. Anyway, the entire forum should give you a good idea. We eventually plan to get more games going over time set in the Lands of Intrigue and Shining South, specifically. We have some links to other PbP communities also.

Edit: lol, okay I just checked your sig, and evidently it would seem you do kind of know how it works (looks like it, anyway). Well, anyway, the more folks doing this sort of thing, the merrier, I say. If we can send any players your way for the FR settings that fall outside of our featured regions, we will! Good luck with your project! :D |

Posted - 23 Feb 2007 : 18:38:05 I know that they have role playing games in Darksun. Don't know about FR though. People are probably too busy with new civilizations cropping up overnight to worry about it. Particularly in the Shadowdale where they are invaded every summer or so. |

I can see Old El and the Seven Sisters playing D&D. |

LOL Thanks for reminding me Mace. I was in Borders last weekend checking out some stuff and buying minis. I was looking through the D&D books they had and right there in the mix with all of them was a nice hardbound book with that exact title on it. Think I will go see if it is still there this weekend while I pick up the DungeonScape book and maybe the tile sets for minis as well. I didn't think that it was actually a hardback printed item but I also didn't look specifically for it either. |

Posted - 23 Feb 2007 : 15:35:28 I always try to encourage a "character over stats" feel to my games, all use stats but if you're trying to use me to run a video game type campaign for you then things are just gonna bust ;D
That said, I play whatever type of character strikes my fancy, they are typically more self motivated than the typical dungeon crawler though.
One of my favorite characters I ever played was a half orc fighter/priest (2nd ed) who was adventuring out in the world in order to learn how humans/dwarves/elves manage to live their lives in a cleanly, fully fed sorta way. His eventual goal was to go home, kick the chieftain out and take the tribe over and turn the tribe from the life of squalor and misery that orcs are used to.
In fact, at this point he'd probably be on his way back home to put his idea's into motion. (but since I don't have a DM for him it doesn't really matter all that much, unless my game heads northwest, then he might make a cameo appearance *g*) |

Yeh, probably called "Offices & Politics"!
There was actually a cartoon in the 1st edition DMG about fantasy characters roleplaying a game like that. |

I doubt Kaladorm had that in mind
I know for a fact that the term "roleplaying" can and hase been misunderstood. For some reason some folks associate roleplaying with people dressing up as nurses, soldiers, cops and whatnot, and they think it always involves kinky sex
Doesn't it? Wait...what game are we playing again?
