How hard would it be to kill one of the Skulls of Skullport? They are spirits of long dead Netherese to my understanding and boy do I like ancient Netherese spell-casters! But the idea is one that ventures into the realm of 'no way is that happening in one of my game sessions.' But to be objective for a moment I would think they at least have a CR 25... (plus they have the support of their comrades, the other Skulls) How many are there even? I've been playing with the idea of making a wizard that is the Musashi of spell duels and I would think that defeating (not necessarily destroying it) a Skull Guardian of Skullport would be a worthwhile goal on the long list of magic users the my PC would have to research and find in order to match magic against. Comments are more than welcome. I don't want it to seem like I just want to kill high level NPCs so please don't mistake this topic for that ridiculous endeavor. I only wish to win spell duels thus proving myself to be the best spell dueler to have lived during my time period. Not a vicious killer that killed to prove his worth.

I very much agree with that last statement Rino.

So we are looking at roughly a EL 40 entity. Hmmmm... with that said I think facing 3 of them would be no fun at all. Now if there was a formal challenge between my PC and one of the Skulls that would arrange a mage duel that might offer some chance of a balanced match. On the other hand I tend to think that the Skulls would not accept the challenge based on their... lack of personality? Perhaps I am saying that incorrectly but it would seem that the PC would have to draw out one of the Skulls and have a contingent of wizards in order to offer assistance against the other Skulls as the appear. The PC would square off on the targeted Skull and make a quick go at it. I would say that the PC would have at the most 3 rounds to try and establish superiority over the targeted Skull. The next few rounds would be retreating and crying like a little girl. Unless of course the Skulls respected the PC's ability and thought he caused no harm so they let him go. On the other hand we are talking about Netherese aracanists and there was no lack of pride in those fellows. What do you all think?

With as many powerful folk as there are down in Skullport, it's a safe assumption that if it was feasible to take on a Skull, someone would have done it before now. I think it says something about their power and resources that it hasn't happened.

Exactly--just because it's rather easy to kill one skull doesn't mean it's a smart idea.

It's about consequences.

However, they were upgraded in the Waterdeep sourcebook to:

Skulls of Skullport, The, 26th Sorcerer/5th Archmage/5th Netherese Arcanist, Advanced 8HD Flameskulls, CN, Rulers of Skullport, City of Splendors: Waterdeep

And so they are way beyond the CR of 4.

Tom Costa also included a 3.5e update for the Skulls in the second volume of the Bestiary of the Realms here:- http://www.ericlboyd.com/dnd/monsters.html

I don't have any thoughts on the rules aspects of this, though I'd say you should probably look over the details about the Skulls in both the Skullport accessory and Eric's CoS tome... for some useful tidbits.
