It was in fact a Forgotten Realms spell that had stony hands sticking out of the ground to grab victims by the ankle / leg and immobilize them.

Could be Manshoon's xorn talons from "The Wizards Three" in Dragon #188, or foothold from FR10 Old Empires p. 73. |

Do not believe so... It would predate Pages by a long period.... This would have been available in '87 - '88... Pages is '95...
I'm looking for the original version so as to transpose to 3.5, since this spell was ***nasty***
OK: have now checked Pages, and that supp ONLY covers material published in Dragon Mag. None of the Wiz spells from the list seem to correspond in any way shape or form.
The spell I seek was originally published in an FR supplement or campaign book. |

Nope, not Bigby's... Those have been around since the PHB 1e.
From memory, this was decidedly in an FR supplement (I remember the text over parchment like paper) and this was WAY before 3e... |

Are you thinking of one of the Bigby's Hand spells. I don't have my books in front of me right now, but I seem to remember the description you give matching one of them. |

This was the only thing I can remember that work a little bit like Evard's Tentacles.
