In the 2nd ed. City of Splendors book I came across Meleghost Starseer, the lawful evil head of Mystra's temple in Waterdeep. He's an 11th level necromancer who is titled "the Magister of Mystra". There's not much info beyond that. Is there more info about him in the 3.5 edition CoS? Thanks in advance. |

It's usually more likely now that the Chosen of Azuth will nominate potential candidates for the position of Magister, among whom Azuth himself selects the Magister.

I'll note that Secrets of the Magister provides a more in-depth detailing of what special abilities are at the Magister's command, though these are subject to the 2e rules set.

The title of Magister does carry it's share of special abilities I think you'll find. :) A glance at MoF would reveal more on that if you have the tome. |

Azuth changed it because the two deities didn't enjoy having mages being killed in the duels, so the death duels have been mostly done away with. |

Has the new Mystra changed the way a Magister is chosen?
From what I remember it's reading from MoF, Magisters are always on the look out for greedy upcoming mages who want to steal their title.
I'm not entirely sure if they'd get it if one were to kill the current Magister, but it made it sound as if the title was 'duel-able' or something.
Or maybe I am completely wrong and need to go read MoF again. |

Talatha Vaerovree of Innarlith is the current Magister. Her 3e stats are in Magic of Faerun but there's actually a better write-up for her in 2e's Secrets of the Magister tome.
She holds the "office" of Magister for Mystra.

While we are at this topic right now:
The title that Meleghost bares, 'Magister of Mystra', it is only the title for the highest ranking clreic of a temp,le or some such thing, right?
Or is he actually the present 'Magister' (being chosen by the gods of magic to encourage the Art)??? |

He is included in Waterdeep and the north as High Priest of Mystra ('Magister of Mystra')10th lvl Magic user.
He is also mentioned on page 90 of the Campaign Guide inthe Spell discription of 'Life Bolt', and on page 61 in Who is Who in Waterdeep still as the High Priest and Magister of Mystra, an LE human 11th lvl Necromancer.
And finally the 3.5 sourcebook CoS has him mentioned on page 43 as the authority figure of the temple of Waterdeep, LE human Necromancer 13/arcane devotee 5.

The Savage Frontier and Waterdeep and the North also has stats/info on him, so I believe he's one of Ed's. :)
Steven has discussed him in the past as well. |
