Anyone know what colors are the Trackless Sea, Sea of Fallen Stars, Shining Sea, etc? |

Sea colour depends on what is in suspension in the area of sea in question. To a large extent it depends on phytoplankton, inorganic particles, and dissolved organic matter. Phytoplankton absorbs red and blue light and will tend to make the sea greener. Some types have more effect than others, and different varieties bloom at different times of year and in different sea conditions. Inorganic particles make seas murkier, and their commonest source is sediment from large rivers. Dissolved organic matter absorbs blue light and also tends to make the sea greener. I can make some suggestions, but these are just suggestions and aren't based on much more than educated guesswork.
The Sea of Fallen Stars should be quite similar to Mediterranean coasts. It's a relatively closed system and the ecological zones in adjacent land areas are mostly similar to those prevailing around the Mediterranean or Black Sea areas. Somewhere like the Moonsea would probably have similarities to the Baltic.
For the Shining Sea I'd suggest similarities to the Arabian Sea, with the coast of Calimshan being similar to the coastline of Pakistan and Arabia. However, it's rather more enclosed than the Arabian Sea and the Southern coast near Chult and Tashalar has significant rain-forest terrain, so it's probably less clear than the Arabian sea and may be somewhat greener.
The Trackless Sea is too large an area to give one answer for. Different areas will have different colours. Around Waterdeep I'd agree that the North Sea is a reasonable suggestion. Further South, around the latitude of Amn, I'd suggest something similar to the coast off California. |

I found only this reference in Sea of Fallen Stars:
"Anyone familiar with the Realms even in the briefest sense has seen the Sea of Fallen Stars -- wide,blue, and one of the oddest inland seas anywhere."
I cannot find any mention of sea colors in Empires of the Shining Sea. |

Thanks so much guys. It makes sense that the waters next to temperate regions would be green because of plankton bloom. I'll look up my pdf of Empires and tell you what I find. |

Sea of Fallen Stars describes the Inner Sea as mostly "blue", with both shades of "deep blue" and "emerald green" in parts, as I recall.
I also seem to recall "hints" about the colours of both the Trackless Sea and the Shining Sea in Steven's Empires of the Shining Sea. Though, I'm away from my books at the moment, and therefore cannot search through those particular passages.

I think the colour depends from location to location. Let me explain. If you are in Waterdeep I think the sea will have more or less the colour you see on the northsea (between great brittain and France, Belgium, Holland). It's a blue, green colour but you can't see far under the water from above. If you have the same coast near Calimshan the water will be more blue and the water is clearer (you can see farther)
That's what I think. If I'm wrong with it please correct me. I didn't saw the sea for about 2 years now lol. |
