Posted - 18 Jan 2007 : 00:22:16 I was just looking through the NPC lists on Candlekeep and under the Clerics I found Separ
"One of the members of the Black Monks, a group that wants to bring back Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul"
He apparently appears in Marco Volo: Journey source book/module
Anyone able to shed any more info on this Black Monks group?
Thanks in advance |

Posted - 18 Jan 2007 : 03:49:58 No. I've found it. It's from Dale Donovan.
On the WotC site... He said something about having written an adventure hook for one of the Black Gauntlet articles that would've featured a Black Monk -- since he "liked those guys from the Marco Volo adventures" -- trying to access one of the portals. Unfortunately, he couldn't find a place to fit it.
That's it.

Posted - 18 Jan 2007 : 01:51:49 Hey sage your not thinking of Cormanthor Portal in the Portals of the Triad article?
One of the hooks for the portal reads as follows
"Reports among Dale folk speak of odd goings-on in the border areas of the Cormanthor forest. Black-cloaked humans skulk about, and an old woman has a strange interest in entwined trees. All these individuals are apparently looking for something, but they don't dare ask the locals for some reason."

Any idea which Perilous Gateway article its in Sage?
I'll have to check through my archives.
I'm thinking it was either the "Moonsea" portals or from "Under the Black Gauntlet" series.
What I do remember is that it says a Black Monk was "recently" seen in the area around one of the portals. That's about it.
I'll take a look.
I just had a look at the Black gauntlet articles and the only people aware of them are a resistence group in Mintar, I also had a look at the Harvest gods portals and couldnt find anything, will have a look at Moonsea |

Did Eric use this group in his Age of Worms FR conversion?
I'm not entirely sure.
You might want to ping Eric about this when he gets back.
Speaking of Eric has anyone seen him around?
He hasn't been around here since the 18th of Dec. I recall seeming him over at WotC a little after that, but nothing since.

Posted - 18 Jan 2007 : 01:30:21 This did remind me a lot of the Ebon Triad from Age of Worms. I don't remember there being any specific reference to the Black Monks in any of the conversions, but it seems to be a natural that the Ebon Triad could have been an offshoot or extension of the group, one that decided that now that Bane was back, perhaps he could help revive the other two as some form of ubergod of evil.
To tell you the truth, Eric came up with so many interesting Realms tie ins in those conversion notes, it makes me want to use some of the information outside of an Age of Worms game. |

Im thinking Melisian may have been a member of the Black Monks from BG2
Perhaps, but...(highlight for Throne of Bhaal spoiler):
Melissan didn't sincerely want to bring back Bhaal, and she never expressed an interest in the other two gods.
The group was probably made up of die hard worshiper from the 3 dead gods who shared a common goal in that they wanted to raise there own god Im thinking that the Banite part of the BLack Monks may well have left the order when Bane was resurrected and joined the his new church |

No prob. Wish I could give you better answers but like I said, TSR/WOTC never did much with them.
Myself, I'd make that group a heretic group. :) Course, with Bane being back.... they have 1 of the 3 goals completed....
Im thinking Melisian may have been a member of the Black Monks from BG2 and maybe the Horned Harbingers from Faithes and Pantheons are in it to. Eric dropped a few Bhaal and Mykrul worshipers in LEOF who could also fit the groups gaols |

Also who wrote MV: Journey?
Not sure if Eric used them.
And Anthony Pryor wrote the module trilogy. |

I think that's all there is to that group. TSR/WOTC never really did anything more with it.
Indeed.
As I recall, they have a (very) brief nod in one of the earlier "Perilous Gateway" articles at WotC... though I don't think they've been reference too much after that.

In one what context did the group appear in Marco volo Journey? Where did he run into them?
Sec, let me grab the module. :) I'll edit this post in moment.
Separ and Nayal (the leader of the band of the sect), and the other acolytes (who are not named), were sent to Berdusk to take over The Great Mother's House (the monastery dedicated to Chauntea) and capture Marco Volo, aka, Marcus Wands. As well as attack the PC's when the PC's rest at the House. |
