Okay, I'm not a big fan of stating out every NPC in the Realms, especially the high level ones that aren't really there for you to fight or compete against, and I've always felt that if you get "short form" stats to NPCs that it goes a long way to telling the DM that these guys are going to be assumed to be around for a while as opposed to someone completely stated out (which just seems to cry, "fight me").
That having been said, how horrible would it be to assume that, due to the various connections, memories, and sheer amount of time and exposure to magic and the Weave, that the Chosen, as part of their "template" have access to all metamagic feats and reserve feats that they would normally qualify for, without having to have the feats themselves?
This would free up all of the Chosen from having to have "basic" metamagic feats, and the only major feats they would need would be those that might be prerequisites for "trickier" feats, like sudden maximize, for example.
Granted, its not that important unless you feel like you have to stat them up, but even keeping this in mind would make them a bit more free to just "know" useful things. |

Not sure how you guys do it in your campaigns but in mine I have always ruled that the Chosen of Mystra are assumed to possess all prerequisite feats needed to obtain any metamagic feat (and, perhaps, other feats fitting with their own personal character concept) but without the benefits of the prereq's. so they may choose the super-epic-devestating-counterspell-with-bonus-slaying-all-who-oppose-me-etc. feat without needing the prereq's required to choose that feat.

Keep in mind, I'm not too worried about this idea one way or the other, since I'm not too worried about statting them up, but as a kind of internal consistancy thing, I just wanted to throw it out there.
My thought on them knowing learning magic the way everyone else does, I was kind of thinking of the retraining idea in Player's Handbook II, which would mean that all of the Chosen might have known various metamagic/reserve feats, but when they became Chosen, and because so much time has gone by in their lives, they could "retrain" those things they know naturally into new feats.
As as said in the original post, just an idea that I wanted to throw out there, thanks for all of the comments so far, and keep them coming. |

Due to being centuries old they'd have learnt the feats on their own in reasonable time, so you could base it on that. |

I am undecided...part of me wants to agree with the fair Lady Rino, the other part with KEJr et al.
In the case of Elminster and the Symbul I'd say that they go beyond the regular feat-limit, and even with Storm enchanting blades by having them pierce her body... there should be different scopes to the chosen of Mystra |

Hmm. As much as I like (and in some cases, love) the Chosen of Mystra, I'm not in favor of them getting everything for free. It's not like they were born archmages. They have plenty of power already, and I like the idea of them having to learn and continue to learn about magic. |

Dunno, they'd still learn like normal mages but due to the power boost their spells would be more effective/powerful than normal. Atleast thats how I see it. |

Considering that they are specifically carrying a bit of the goddess of magic within themselves, I think it's reasonable to assume they've "inherited" a better understanding of magic than most mages would get -- especially Syluné. |

I think that its a great idea, and something that could definitely be assumed for the chosen. Even Dove, the least magical of the Chosen, should be able to be a bit more flexible with her spells than Joe-Blow-Mage. |
