Posted - 30 Nov 2006 : 15:01:42 Hi :) As we know from Unaproachable East and Spellbound every male human in Rashamen who shows any gift to arcane magic has two choices: 1)become Vremyonni, "Old Ones", old spellcasters whose main task is reaserching new spells etc., 2)leave Rashamen with geas which forbid you to tell about Vremyonni abroad, And now I have two questions: 1. Does Vremyonni have any ranks, titles (in simply words, hierarchy) such as Great Master? Or are they simply Vremyonni and every member of "guild" has the same position? And if they have ranks, is it known who is the leader of Old Ones? 2. Is there any chance to left Vremyonni or membership in it is lifelong? 3. Was there in history any precedent when yonug man with arcane magic gift wasn't taken to Vremyonni and lived normally in Rashamen?
I will be graetful for your help :) Once again, sorry for my english ;) |

Posted - 03 Jun 2009 : 17:56:29 Just got done reading "Shield of Weeping Ghosts". Bastun was suspected in the death of his little sister, accused of the death of his mentor and theft of lore regarding the Shield. Also read "Bladesinger" and found mention of the "Ildva" any idea of what that is? |

anyway the Vremoni in that book was charged with some crime and he chose exile, and thus he he would of either got it or be executed. |

I know there is a Hathran and a Vremoni being escorted to such a citadel in the Novel Shield of the Weeping Ghosts...a fine read...but maybe not all the lore you want.
There are also flashbacks describing his relationship with his mentor. I picture the settlements of the vremyonni to be like so many (ancient Greek) Academies, with certain venerable scholars noted for particular typoes of research or particular types of item creation, and young vremyonni gravitating to the one whose teaching most closely resembles their own goals. It might be amusing to role-play an incident in which a young vremyonni decides to "change his major," as we'd say.
A question so far not addressed by the great sages (as far as I know) is: what do the vremyonni do for sexual solace? Do they have women living among them (or near them) who serve as wives or concubines, or do they live a totally Spartan lifestyle (in all senses of the word)?

Posted - 02 Feb 2009 : 20:05:46 I read somewhere that there was a "Compact" between the Hathran and the Vremyonni that keep the Vremyonni "chained" in their hidden citadels. Can anyone help a poor lore starved girl? |

2. I believe that as the command to either join the vremyonni or leave is penelized by death, that a similar fate befalls all those that decide to leave the ranks of the vremyonni. I guess they would be hunted and captured or even killed, for the securety of the nation.
3. I don't know of any such thing. Though if so he would be very sercetive about it and his powers would be very limited as he has no one and nothing to learn from in order to improve his magical abilities. Unless of course he is of outstanding talent....
However, I will try to look through the 2nd ad. sourcebook (Spellbound) about rashemen to see if I find anything more that might help.

1. I doubt there are any official ranks or titles, it is probably a "brotherhood" kind of thing, and the higher the caster level the more respect the man has...and I'm not sure but I would think every Vremyonni knows who leads the Old Ones and at least every senior witch
2. I think it is said it is lifelong (and probably beyond that)
3. With their war with Thay (and lesserly the Demonlands) I don't think they (as in all of Rasheman) can afford not to take male children with arcane talents...and I think it is said the parents gladly make that sacrifice for the good of all
