lvl 20 fighter vs. lvl 20 barbarian vs. lvl 20 paladin vs. lvl 20 monk vs. lvl 20 monk vs. lvl 20 ranger

Which of the martial classes if any is the best at higher levels?

My fellow scribes, I think that ALL of these character classes are EQUALLY good at higher (or any) levels. IMHO all of them are also equally fun to play.

One important question to ask is - what are these characters fighting?
Though I guess that just means this is all highly situational.
And why is monk listed twice?

Okay, now, we're looking at this wrong. This isn't a case of "which published character would win, X or Y?" This is more a comparison of various classes, their abilities and capabilities.

We don't need to bring in any named characters. It is not that kind of a thread. It's more a question of who is the best tank, or the most capable combatant.

The question does need to be clarified a bit, since "best" is rather subjective. But we can compare and contrast the various merits and abilities of the respective classes.

I believe you're referring to 'The Concerns Of The Mighty' sidebar in the FRCS on page 84. Wise words indeed, and something I've used in more than one debate over the years.

I myself try not to get entangled into these forum topics but it is amazing to see how much people love to compare their heroes/favorites against other peoples opinions. It always ends up ugly but I guess it is human nature. I forget if it was in the FRCS or in MoF but I think Elminster said it best. Allow me to para-phrase or "somesuch" (that is a shout out to Mr Kemp ). I believe Elminster was complaining about how everyone thinks he and the chosen should be wondering all over Faerun taking care of the bad guys so that their evil stops from spreading. However he goes on to say but what if I am unlucky and die at the hands of Manshoon or some great red dragon? This is entirely possible and the biggest reason why the big personalities of the realms usually work through proxies. Now in my own opinion I thought this was an excellent explanation although poorly worded in my attempt to explain the entry to my fellow scribes. So basically the big personalities of the realms use proxies in any case they can in order to watch from afar and gain insight into the situation without taking them away from the unaviodable conflicts that could hit them at any moment. Anybody know what entry I'm talking about? I think I need help explaining this. It was really well written too. I suggest every take a look at it. It makes this versus nonsense irrelevant.

Well, regardless, let's try to remember that we've all just had a recent bout of "versus" scrolls... most of which have ended up sealed.

I would like to thank Reefy and Rino for playing along. I only meant to make this a Forgotten Realms relevant topic. That was my point.

Yeah, and he should have at least ten more levels than how he was written up in the FRCS...

There is no 'better', even if we're talking duels.

Some of them are very heavily reliant on equipment, others on certain situations.

Two 20lvl fighters can be drastically different though choices of feats, skills and equipment, let alone all the different classes. The fact that this question is unanswerable is a credit to the balance in the rules made in 3.5

And anyway

Does it really matter?

Leaving that little note aside, I would go for the fighter. Plain and simply cut in half by the bastard sword. Who's to argue with that....

I believe that's just gonna be a matter of opinion. Personally, I kinda like the ability to pop up, stick ya and disappear before you know what hit you, like a high level ranger can.

First best at what ? If you mean duals, my vote is on the 20 level monk.
