Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 14:07:07 Updated (Psionic power) Okay i am a DM and one of may players made this Half giant chain psysic warrior, he is a "POWER PLAYER" and knows and abuses the ruels fully. He has a 3 in cha, because quote: "I can still be a beatuful half giant with 3 in cha".
Okay back to the problem this chain is realy p++++++ irritating me, when he meetīs orgeīs and other dangerus creatures he trips them, and when they are triped, they die quick, because they dont have reach as he have.
I know what he is going after, a Psionic power Expansion. (somting that sizes him up to huge) This gives him sizes and strenght bonus to trip.
I know Ways to stop this Tumbel, sunder and darkness....
But my question is what would you do as DM. a carekter is beating all the creatures, and they are in no danger at all, because of the miss-use of trip and the chain weapon ?
We play forgotten realms 3.5.

Posted - 14 Nov 2006 : 12:28:18 Biggest advice I could give is to remember a) keep monsters you will use against them appropriate to their CR and the setting. b) Do not go out of your way (or give e.g. simple minded monsters a one track vindictiveness) to harm the character in question.
Any attempt to obviously destroy or remove the problem character is hardly fair and will be met with resentment by the player, and likely the other players. Simply show that the character is not perfect in every situation, and that his teammates have their uses too. |

Posted - 13 Nov 2006 : 05:13:37 Make sure you have the other characters busy with other foes so that the giant has to deal with these guys by himself. Maybe another enemy will use magic or missile weapons on the giant while he's already occupied with his new dwarven friends. Boy, will he ever be happy...
Oh - and maybe those two dwarves will have that feat (can't remember it now) that increases their flanking bonus. |

Posted - 13 Nov 2006 : 05:10:26 He seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't put any points into sense motive. Throw a little quick rogue at him who has tons of bluff skill, improved feint and a high sneak attack bonus, as well as instant stand and tumble. The rogue will just tumble in, fake him out as a move action every round with his improved feint, sneak attack, and repeat. If the giant gets a trip, the rogue just hops up with his instant stand. Fun! Better yet, make it two of them, just to keep him busy. And make them dwarves! That'll really make him enjoy himself. Just think about their defence bonus and whatnot! I can't think of anything a giant would enjoy more than a couple of dwarves rolling around his feet carving nice little furrows into his hamstrings with their axes! |

Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 20:24:19 A little harsh using a coup de grace to eliminate the problem, but yes FurryFury has a great idea there. Anything with any low stat is very vulnerable to stat damage. This seems a perfectly possible thing to happen given that psionics is already in your campaign |

Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 20:06:13 He loves psionics and has a Charisma of 3? In next encounter, let him face a psion with this little trick =) http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/egoWhip.htm (possible augmented via Overchannel just to be sure) *boom* PC incapacitated... Coup-the-Grace... roll next character, dude. |

Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 18:42:27 I always used a red dragon of on power gamers, who constantly abused the rules. The Red dragon would show up around the next corner, or fly out of the clouds, or whateve,r when one or more of my players continued to get out of hand with the rules. after a while it became a joke in my group and fun and tactful way of saying cool it |

Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 16:37:52 To avoid his trip strategy have them fight flying creatures and set up encounters where there are different elevations. Use ranged opponents and opponents with magic who might polymorph him or bind his legs. In any encounter I would assume that people would target him since he appears the most powerful.
To make the game more player balanced create encounters where the abilities of other characters are tested: stranded on a mesa, divided by a chasm requiring magic to solve. An encounter where subtlety is necessary. Any encounter that requires diplomacy.
as eytan said any character with a charisma of 3 is so barely human (giant) that it should be difficult for the other players in the group to be with him. While they might rely on his brute strength, you must remember that he is just that... a brute! No matter what he says he is not beautiful. While the core rulebooks state that charisma is not just physical beauty (meaning a low score could mean the person is still attractive just with low people skills), in this case a score that low means that person has a terrible appearance AND has an overwhelmingly difficult time relating to others. You are the DM and you counteracts whatever false impression this player might have. Really he should never be able to be on his own in a town becuase the people there would be so repulsed by his presence. This doesn't mean he is intimidating... it means he is despicable.
Just to point out.... power gamers who sacrifice ability scores in order to enhance their abilities often fail to realize the extreme to which their inability is a hinderance. A half giant psionics wielder should be dangerous to everyone around him. He might be intelligetn and wise but he has no ability to really distinguish allies and enemies. Almost every attempt to interact with him socially should fail. And his own party members should be really disgusted by him and abhor him as well.

Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 15:22:44 A Charisma of 3 is a huge weakness. You should be using reaction checks if you want to make it challenging for him. Chr 3 is low enough to terrify, unnerve, or infuriate most people. No one reacts well to something that is basically inuman, monstrous, and terrifying. If he wants to consider himself beautiful, then he must realize that the lack of Charisma must show up in another way. If he is beautiful and has Chr 3, then his personality should come across as heinous, depraved, and alien. Either that or he should be mentally ill, completely lacking a sense of self. |

Posted - 11 Nov 2006 : 14:10:39 Send in more monsters with additional legs (bonus to trip) or monsters that simply can't be tripped (not sure if this is a rule but can you trip an ooze?). Flying monsters work well.
Basically this character is good, and that's fair enough if someone wants to play it, you can't not allow someone to play something thats powerful. Just vary the encounters so that the other characters have a role to play. After a few encounters where tripping is useless the player will realise that yes it's powerful in certain situations but it does still have weaknesses, and that he can't just rely on that one attack. |
