The Hat of disguise only duplicates the Disguise spell
Thanks in adv |

No cannon but novel source...
As far as I know of, the Mask was never given stats in any version of the game. The Mask was alluded to as being more than Disguise Self or maybe even more than Alter Self. After all it allowed Artemis to go from being a Human to a very short Halfling (Regis). I think the Mask was hinted at as being a Minor Artifact. |

Really? Novels have been canon since 1987. :)
Indeed.
'Tis part of the reason why many of us consider the novels to be valid sources of Realmslore when scribes ask for lore pertaining to a particular region, locale, race, or personage in the Realms. Some novels -- especially those by Ed, Elaine, Paul, and [snicker] now Steven, almost serve as sourcebooks in their own right at times given the amount of Realmslore detailed inside.

Posted - 23 Sep 2006 : 21:19:22 Hmm.. Mysteries of the Moonsea mentions that the Thayan Enclave in Hillsfar sells items (potions) of Alter Self, in order to make non humanoids look human. No stats or the like though.

Costs 12,700 gp and uses Disguise Self and Invisibility. Not what he is looking for. |

Posted - 23 Sep 2006 : 10:53:40 Nothing official that I can think of off-hand.
In the process of creating one that did Alter Self instead of Disguise Self though, I found they are off on the price they used.
Hat of Disguise should be 2,000 gp per the rules instead of 1,000 gp, unless I missed an errata somewhere.
Using Alter Self instead, it would be 2 x 3 x 2,000 gp x 2 = 24,000 gp, which is outrageous for such a "trivial" magic item. However going with how they built the Hat, it was 1 x 1 x 2,000 gp / 2 = 1,000 gp, which would give us a Hat of Alter Self for 6,000 gp.
Hat of Alter Self: This hat is very similiar to the more common Hat of Disguise, except the wearer has unlimited use of the Alter Self spell. So Minor Transmutation, CL 3, Craft Wondrous Item, Alter Self, price of 6,000 gp.
Quick and dirty, but there you go. |
