Another couple of odd 'flavouring the FR' thoughts that occurred to me this afternoon, and I figured I'd do better to run them past my fellow scribes before pestering THO and/or Ed with them:
Does anyone know if anyone on Faerun ever invented cotton-twill fabrics similar to denim or tweed? If so, did these ever achieve any sort of popularity for their warmth and durability, or did they vanish back into obscurity with the creator's death/going out of business, being declared 'too hard/expensive to make'? (I understand that these materials can be created on hand-looms....)
Similarly, I'm wondering about the types of hats favoured by adventurers, especially those in the Cormyr/Sembia/Cormanthor area.
- Would I be correct in presuming that felt is a moderately common (if slightly pricey) material used in Faerunian hat-making?
- Would I be considered grossly out-of-world if I showed a character (or band thereof) wearing slouch hats of a pattern similar to the real-world fedora or Stetson? Being such outdoorsmen, adventurer or forester headgear (when helms weren't appropriate) would likely evolve along similar lines as those of real-world cowboys and such, correct?

I strongly suspect that any "stetson-type hats" would exist in the Realms. I think there are many examples to be seen in featured Realms art. VGtC mentions something about Cormyrean headgear, if I remember correctly.
Elves and nobles seem to have (in Ed's novels) clothes made of 'shimmerweave'. There might have been also other materials mentioned in Ed's novels. |

I don't see any listening of the two materials you are looking for in the Aurora's catalog. Of course, that doesn't mean they don't exist but I'm not sure how they would be priced....
As for the hats, if you want them then add them. :) The deity trilogy from 2e has some picture examples of hats but, to me, a lot of them don't look like what you are asking. But again, that doesn't mean they can't exist. |

I don't see why felt should be pricey, it is easy and cheap to make and would in my opinion be the common material for hats. When it comes to hat shapes I think broad brimmed hats would be common, but I think they would be of a somewhat more primitive design than a Stetson. round down-turned brim and a low plum, sort of like a up side down shallow dish, made of leather or felt. I would also think the "Robin Hood hat" and hoods would be common as well as rimless felt hats.
I should point out that I am writing from memory of early medieval hats and could be wrong as I am far from an expert on the subject. Also, Faerunian city dwellers has been showed as dressed in everything from early medieval to late 17th century garb, so the hat types could wary greatly. |
