Posted - 16 Apr 2006 : 15:13:18 I was wondering if anyone knew how long it took to sail from Baldur's gate to Waterdeep. The current month is Mirtul, if that makes any difference. |

Posted - 17 Apr 2006 : 02:31:39 In my estimation, if the Empress Goddess of the Sea is happy and not whimful, then the trip should be less than 3 days provided sea conditions and wind conditions were favorable and that Sahuagin raiders are too far away from the ship. Sahuagin raiders pose a serious threat to any ship sailing the seas.
If the Goddess of the Sea were to kick up a fuss, then the sea and wind conditions will change drastically, and if the sea monsters and Sahuagin are on the rampage, the voyage may take at least a week or worse, no need to arrive at all. |

I think they were using a reference from Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast which mentions someabout about a trip from the North by sea to Baldur's Gate taking "a few days".

Posted - 16 Apr 2006 : 17:44:22 3 days sounds about right.
*Gets technical cause its easter and well, I'm bored.*
Assuming were talking sailing with no help from a Seamage to speed things along....
Then travel time will depend on the type of ship and the direction of the wind. (I'd assume from the NW is typical for the sword coast)
Taking a carrack, with a top speed of around 6kts on a windy day and a fairly straight tack into wind, (that would be close to a right angle dog leg, straight out into the sea of swords, then heading due north to Waterdeep.) I'd say it would take 3 days (around 170 miles a day).
A schooner capable of sailing closer to the wind and being faster, around (8-9kts), could get away with battling the probable south flowing current between Orlumbor and the mainland and cut that journey time down to under 2 days, (9kts = approx 240 miles a day).

Posted - 16 Apr 2006 : 16:41:21 Travel by water has advantages, because they do not have to eat or sleep and generally do not run into wandering monsters. Depending on quality of light houses they do not have to even stop at all for darkness. OTOH there are also hazzards and direction of wind, currents and size of ship or boat can sometimes result in slower travel then by land. Espcially if land travelers are using varios magics or fast mounts. |

Posted - 16 Apr 2006 : 15:37:36 I want to say that there's a table showing a number of travel-times between cities along the Sword Coast in a 2nd-edition sourcebook, but I can't find it.
I am sure I've seen something like it though. |
