As per usual my late night reading has got me to thinking, and once again I'm here on Candlekeep . Perhaps this would be a good one for Ed Greenwood, but lets see how well we can do together first :)

This time it's about formal greetings (or farewells or other formalities) that are said, pretty much perfunctorily.

One example is at the temple of Tymora
Greeting - "Why come you to this house of honour to the Lady?"
Response - "To take our chances"

Any other suggestions would be great (I know there are some similar ones for other organisations, and pretty sure there are some for Tyr, Torm, Helm and the like).
If this scroll takes off I'll try and compile the whole lot into a nice readable article.

Get cracking scribes!

Thanks for the amusing stories guys :)
Ideally though I'd prefer ones that you've seen printed in novels (I've just finished reading Spellfire and my two came form there). I know we have a lot of scribes reading some novel or other at the moment, and it's quite likely one or more organisation or church formalities will appear in one

Postulant: Wait, is that why we all seem to be acting more evil? Is this one of those Time of Trouble things?

Gatekeeper: No, seriously. Its a temple to Ilbrandul. We worship the god of mildew and underground stuff and we even have those lizard things here . . . honestly, we don't worship Shar.

Postulant: Then why are we trying to learn how to use the Shadow Weave?

Gatekeeper: Because Shar wants to make sure that we can practice our Art without the knowlage of the followers of Mystra and their meddling.

Postulant: You just said we worship Shar.

Gatekeeper: No I didn't. I said no such thing.

Postulant: Yes you did, you just did. You said Shar wanted us to use the Shadow Weave. She killed Ilbrandul and took his place, didn't she . . .

Gatekeeper: ::Fires crossbow into postulant's chest::

Voice from within the temple: Who is it, why is the door open.

Gatekeeper: Just a door to door heretic . . . nothing to worry about.

Okay, so that greeting needs some work.

(Sorry, my brother just got me some Monty Python DVDs . . . they must be influencing my thinking)

"a door to door heretic" - great stuff, Knight

Another one here to add to the list (please do still post any other ones you find occuring in novels or sourcebooks).

This one at a council of the cult of the dragon

Greeting - "The Wearers of Purple are met, for the glory of the dead dragons"
Response - "For their dominion"

One that is common in my game is:

Welcome to the Halls of Llira! Come! Be enraptured!
silvermage Posted - 22 Feb 2006 : 08:59:42
Eliastree Priestess: May our Dark Lady's heap her blessings on you.

Visitor 1: No thank you, if I do accept, then I will be dancing and fighting without my pants and shirt on.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eliastree priestess: How can our Dark Lady help you?
Visitor: To learn dancing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Waukeen priestess: Welcome to the Halls of the Lady of Wealth. How may our lady help you?

Visitor: To get rich.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's something:
Tyrran Priest: What brings you to the judgment halls of Tyr?
Visitor: Because I need the weighing scales from your god.
Tyrran Priest: Huh? For justice then?
Visitor: No, to "justify" myself.
****************************************
Helmite priest: Farewell, may the Ever Vigilant Eye of Helm watch you against the dangers of the road.
Adventurer1: (murmurs) And May the Helm's All Seeing Eye don't get too long-sighted that it can't see short distance.
Adventurer2: May Helm don't forget to watch his armor as well, they need polishing.
I remembered sometime ago during a campaign with my fellows, somebody said this during a visit to one of Shar's Temples.
Here it is:
DM: (Masked Priest of Shar) You had come far to our most secluded sanctuary of the Lady of Loss. Why have you come?
PC 1: (A human warrior) I came because I need to forget something from my mind.
DM: (Masked Priest of Shar) (raised his eyebrows) The Lady of Loss preaches loss and forgetfulness, perhaps you can join Her faithful and she will help you, what is it you want out of your mind?
PC 1: I need to forget the idiotic smell inside my mind.
