I know this is a bit early, since the book hasn't even come out yet, but after reading the article in Dragon Magazine that introduces the Pact Magic aspect of the Tome of Magic, the idea of Vestiges really grabbed me as something that could lead to some interesting Realmslore, or at least something that could cause some interesting extrapolations from existing Realmslore.

Vestiges are essentially spirits that can grant special powers to those that contact them and make a pact with them. Vestiges are essentially "between" in existance. They aren't fiends or undead or celestials, they are sort of like fragments of something that was once in a different form, and now only exists more or less to offer these pacts. The examples they give in the Dragon article are Kas, the vampire leutenant of Vecna from Greyhawk, who no longer exists in physical form, and Primus, who was destroyed by Orcus, and now exists as a spirit like creature that makes pacts with those that want to impose order.

So I was trying to think of "in-between" creatures that might exist to make pacts in the Realms. The first entity that I thought of was Myrkul, but I think that since he exists in the Crown of Horns, he may not qualify for the sort of psuedo spiritual existance that Vestiges are suppose to have.

Anyone that has read the article, or when the book comes out, or that thinks they have a handle on how these things work, do you have any ideas about creatures in the Realms that might occupy this kind of in-between, don't qualify as any other creature, powerful enough to make pacts sort of status?

Hopefully the above will make SOME kind of sense!

Greetings

I would be interested to see how the rules for vestiges differ from the rules for companion spirits in the DMG 2. And could either be easily used in creating rules for ritual magic’s in particular at the epic or near epic level? I would think that pact magic would be closely intertwined with ritual magic and companion spirits it would be nice if these rules worked together.

I was kind of thinking of Sylune as well, but I'm not sure if she is "in-between" enough to be a vestige, since she is pretty active for a dead woman. She might qualify though. Apparently, from the article, it looks like there will be a specific class that will utilize the ability to make these pacts, and the article also intimates that said class generally is regarded as outcasts by casters of other stripes. I guess we won't have too much concrete information until the actual book comes out.

I haven't read the article, but can you tell from the article if this particular form of magic is a full casting procedure, or something where a non-magic using class could pick up a power or two by using feats? (Or perhaps a full class?)

The examples given don't really lend themselfs toward good users of pact magic though. (I prefer to play good character pretty much all the time.) Because I was thinking Sylune (sp?), the dead one from the seven sisters.
