Okay, one of my player's has a barbarian, and since everyone in the group was from Cormyr, and was adventuring in Mistledale, we wanted a barbarian tribe that was nearby, not a "streach" like an Uthgardt or a Northman or a Rashemi might seem to be. So I volunteer that he might be a Tunlar, and ran with a lot of info, including Ed's comments in his thread about the Tunlar and what not.

Then Champions of Valor came out and actually helped out, as I ended up making his character a Mir, since he was constantly talking about going home to give up half of his gains to his mother and sisters that he constantly is protecting, and that his father was killed by Zhents. I detailed what monsters were lurking nearby, about the bugs and disease and Thaliim Torchtower and the Zhents and Darkhold, and all of that. Then came the one thing I didn't think out before hand.

"So who is the god of War?" he asks. Reflexively I say Tempus. Now, several months later, I am starting to wonder. The Tunlar are decended from Netherese refugees, the same base stock as the Uthgardt, but while the Uthgardt interbred with the Northmen (and presumably picked up the worship of Tempus there), the Tunlar, near as I can tell, just settled in their marsh, and likely brought what gods they knew with them.

So, long story short (too late, I know), should I have told him Garagos? He has already been pretty good at roleplaying his reverence for Tempus, and visits shrines to tell Tempus stories of his battles (he points out Tempus needs no gold, but always loves a good war story), and was thrilled to visit the Tempus holy sites near Mistledale and Battledale.

So, was Tempus completely out of line for a Tunlar, or am I overthinking this?

Nah, just tell the player he was from Narfell or Vaasa and he's just been confused all this time <g>.

I like that George. I'll mention that to my player. I will point out that his people refer to their god as Targus, but he, having worked as a mercenary for a few years, knows that Targus and Tempus are different names for the God of War. Thanks for the help, both of you!

To give the situation "historical" and "regional" flavor you might consider having your PC worship a deity he names Targus (the old Netherese name for Garagos) but which in actuality, with the Talfirian dominance over the Netherese diaspora in the Heartlands, is for all intents and purposes Tempus. Tempus doesn't mind being addressed as Targus because it is a reminder of his victory over Garagos centuries ago. Just a thought.

I think either Tempus or Garagos would've been fine. Garagos lost most of his following eons ago. Why would they worship a war god that lost. I would think they would've adopted the modern equivalents where appropriate of their neighbors in the W. Heartlands and Cormyr, though they are somewhat isolated. It could go either way depending on where you want it to go.
