Was thinking about starting a ranger the other day, and I remembered that in 2e at least, you had to pick a racial enemy. I always feel a certain amount of consternation at this point because I can never seem to find a good reason to pick any creature. Normally I guess it would be a roleplaying related decision, but I find myself normally making the decision based on either how many of that creature I'm likely to encounter or which creature I simply find the most interesting.

So this breeds my new pet topic for today, what do you think is the most interesting realms creature. Baring in mind this is a friendly discussion topic, anythign goes. I don't limit it to creature, personalities are also welcome. Just a fun topic on what really interests you.

For my own part, I've read about Tiamat and other Dragon lore and I got to say that practically anything to do with Dragons is good for me. The other creatuer that I particularly enjoyed reading about was Dendar, she's pretty cool.

So yeah, let's hear it

Phaerimm are such an alien form of thought and mind. If fact, their war with the Sharn was such an interesting concept. As Sharn are completely Chaotic Neutral, but they went out of their way to whoop on the Phaerimm and put them behind a impenerable wall.

The Sharn vs. Phaerimm war reminds me of Alien vs. Predator - two races that could just take out hundreds of laypeople but are too busy killing each other to do so.

Mintiper Moonsilver is an interesting character, to me. Ditto for Baelam "the Bold".

As for critters... Tressym, fey'ri, lythari, genasi, Seelie fae, and the Render are ones that really interest me. I'm also intrigued by the elgonn (sp?), but I don't think that one is Realms-specific.

Psionics. "Strength from within, not from without" is what makes me feel they surpass wizards and clerics.

I have to go with one of Crennen's earlier picks. I have been facinated with Phaerimm since I first read Anauroch. They just seem like the ultimate alien villains, so strange, with their own built in strange adversaries (the Sharn) and their mysterious history. And hey, picking aberrations as a favored enemy seems like a natural sometimes. Who doesn't want to be able to dispatch something so twisted, warped, and dangerous as quickly as possible?

I gotta back up C. of Bane on this one; Divine casters are awesome!!
Beezy Posted - 28 Oct 2005 : 22:59:06
I like displacer beasts myself

My vote is going to be quite broad but I can explain.

Divine Casters

I think the best thing about the realms is the amount of deities and the effort put forth to detail them. Each god not only has their specific portfolio, they all have well described personalities, likes, dislikes, and so on. Before playing in the realms I was more of a rogue guy with the occasional fighter.

When playing in the realms I am totally a Cleric, Paladin guy. Champions of these well described deities are a lot of fun to play.

I think this is true with novels too. The clerics/fanatics of a deity are always fun to read about. Whether it's the priest series or complementary characters in other novels, I think the religious flavor adds a lot to the story.

Elaine Catch my heart with the adventures of Liriel.

And Steven with Khelben.

Definately Artemis Entreri. Or Elaith Craulnober. Guess I like assassins:)

Hehe, Usul decrees that today's realm character of choice will be the Tressym!

What about characters?

They might not be Realms-specific, but they do feature more strongly in the Realms than the other settings.

Yuan-ti definiely have an appeal - they can send the pure-bloods out to scout around and once they have a party tricked - BAM - here comes the Abomination to eat them.

Plus, being from reptiles and the such, you know they're sneaky!

With the icky, scary looking arms.

You wouldn't happen to be related to a cleric named Piffany by any chance?

I know they're not exactly Realms-specific, but I really like the Yuan-ti.

Tressyms are great--I like cute winged kitty cats.

But still, this question is hard to answer because I like all kinds of critters; I can't really pick an absolute favorite.
Reefy Posted - 27 Oct 2005 : 01:00:50
I'm a fan of tressyms too. I also like many of the Rashemi spirits, they were something which struck me many years ago before I properly discovered the Realms.

I hear you, Usul, dragons all the way!!

Most interesting creature? - Intelligent Deepspawn... There's just something fascinatingly disturbing about a single creature that can generate it's own personal army, and is evil and cunning enough to make it work... Pity that they aren't used more often in mods and fiction as an intelligent foe...

Best choice for Racial Enemy? - Undead... You'll always face undead throughout your career... They're evil as sin... And since you can't Crit or Sneak Attack them you need every bonus you can...
Thelonius Posted - 26 Oct 2005 : 21:16:55
Indeed I find most interesting Dryads and Nymphs, not not for this you are thinking.... I 've always found inetersting the earth's impersonations, and the very tru bond the nature shares with such a "humans" beings indeed captivates me... Why the nature would choose those creatures?
Neriandal Freit Posted - 26 Oct 2005 : 14:50:09
Neriandal Freit of Waterdeep, he is a fascinating person...

Can't tell you who or what he is ;)

I totally agree with you there.... I don't know if they are the most interesting, but they certainly would be fussy and they could get to the cat food no matter how high you hid it. Especially with that Int of 12!

Orcs, I just love orcs. You know the good thing about orcs, they rarely travel alone
