Ok. Now I admit I am a stickler when it comes to geology and maps. That said, can someone tell me this...

Why is it that supposedly there are volcanoes in Chult but the only volcano on the map of Faerun is the one outside of Neverwinter???

Volcanoes are our friends, they should be on the map. What's up with the volcano hating?

Talos must be irritated that all the volcanoes disappeared, being a God of such things as volcanic destruction... Obviously it doesn't make much sense to have a volcano randomly placed in the plains, but any mountainous region is fair game. And you'll probably find a Talosian / Talassan (whatever) shrine on the edge as well.

If I had known the answer I would have mentioned it, sorry.

Thank you. It was sorta what I was thinking also. :)

Because they were too lazy to put any more there?
Kianna Posted - 19 Oct 2005 : 04:10:02
If you build on a volcano, you have defenses....and its fertile so you can reap the fruits of nature.

But that takes us back to driving your chariot over the lava and stuff like that.

:)

Where is this going anyways? People keep posting here but I think I am the only one who has kept it going about volcanoes. And I think my original question was never answered.

Maps are very well drawn around here, and believe me, I always have mine checked before I put the finishing touches on them.

That's good. You're actually right about building in the forests, too. If a town is to be built there, the builders had better consider the fact that they may not be wanted, and what kind of defenses they plan to have in case there is an invasion.
Crennen FaerieBane Posted - 18 Oct 2005 : 14:42:48
City of Rubies - that is a strange city with a very strange story. I don't qquite understand earthquakes burying it, raising it up, then burying it again. That doesn't make much geological sense.

Fine, my next map will have tons of volcanoes... hey, wait, my campaign world had a whole string of the fire-spurters!

Kianna Posted - 18 Oct 2005 : 02:19:30
But you don't put nearly enough volcanoes on them!

I seriously think earthquakes are underrated too though don't get me started on the quake that swallowed the City of Rubies OR the quake that resurfaced it OR the quake that buried it again.....

:)

*nods* Rivers and other geographical features that for some reason make no sense make me raise my eyebrows. I just can't dismiss that--even a fantasy world has to have some logic to it.

Same goes for human built structures--towns shouldn't just be built in the middle of nowhere unless the people who live there have some magical means of getting food, water, and supplies.
Kianna Posted - 16 Oct 2005 : 20:35:13
It's funny but when I started college and went back and looked at all my maps from high school I too had funny rivers starting and ending in weird places. But now all my maps have tons of volcanoes and rivers that make sense.... :)
Crennen FaerieBane Posted - 16 Oct 2005 : 17:09:59
Yes, all the maps in our house are very, VERY, geologically sound. And it makes sense.

When I created my first world - I had crazy rivers starting out of no where and the like. After becoming edumicated, it would just bother me. Now, I have a certain someone pour over my maps and make sure everything is good before I laminate them and make them permanent. :)

No, but I like it when world-designers pay attention to it. After all, most fantasies have other real world aspects like gravity, seasons, etc.
Kianna Posted - 14 Oct 2005 : 02:48:00
Well, technically if there were tremors due to volcanoes and you were a dwarf living underground you may not be that affected. You would be living in the very bedrock of the earth and while you would get shaking, I doubt the strong stone (granite) would crumble.

Now, if the Spine of the World Mts. were made of something softer...like marshmellow...then you would be in trouble. :)
Ranin Posted - 13 Oct 2005 : 18:46:50
Hi.

I also think volcanoes add spice to any adventure. One great example is in the game Icewind Dale in Dragonīs Eye. I always loved that level and with the lizard men and Yuan-Ti in it.

Technically, in my view, the Spine of the World mts could have active a large number of active volcanoes, but then, the poor Dwarves of Dorns Deep and Mithril Hall would have to build earthquake proof rooms. ...i think.
khorne Posted - 13 Oct 2005 : 18:32:19
I know there is an epic spell that creates a volcano, but is there any spell that makes an existing volcano go kabloieee?
Kianna Posted - 13 Oct 2005 : 14:53:48
Well, we would if there was such a thing as an elemental plane!

Isn't that what Earth-geologists call a "hot spot?"
Kianna Posted - 13 Oct 2005 : 14:01:08
You are right. Geo-reality doesn't need to apply to fantasy. Obviously. Let's look at the cretion of Evermeet for crying out loud. No sense whatsoever!

Like I said before, I think the power of a volcano belching up hot stuff and ultimately bringing an adventuring party together is underrated. Lava is cool. I like volcanoes and think there should be one in every mountain range.

And yeah, its fantasy but to someone who studied the darn things for 5 years of her life, I guess I am , like I said, retentive about where they are located and why. Though I also like the "Well that area just happens to sit on a nexus that leads to the Elemental Planes of Fire and Earth."

I am sure we are all that way about *something* in our games. :)

I am assuming there was never actual geological consulting going on when the maps were made.

Y'think?... Fortunately it's a fantasy game setting, so geological reality doesn't really need to apply... Need a reason for a volcano? Well that area just happens to sit on a nexus that leads to the Elemental Planes of Fire and Earth. Voila! Instant reason...

Also, the only volcanoes you'll ever read about in FR lore are the ones that have exploded, or directly impact a city in some way... Otherwise nobody would bother writing about Volcano X that just sits there and doesn't even give off a puff of smoke... Hence you'd be able to place a volcano any place you like and say it suddenly becomes active... A mountain that starts spitting out a few lava balls and some smoke isn't going to break canon unless you destroy something big...
Kianna Posted - 13 Oct 2005 : 02:31:49
Well, maybe and maybe not. This could be plate subduction causing volcanoes but remember, subduction also leads to orogeny. So, like in the Himalayas, there may just be uplift but no volcanism. I was more wondering about the placement of Neverwinter Volcano in relation ot other things around it. Its such a small range so the volcano must be really young.

I am assuming there was never actual geological consulting going on when the maps were made. That might be a bit too retentive. Although my maps are all as geologically sound as possible..but I am weird like that.
Crennen FaerieBane Posted - 13 Oct 2005 : 02:27:31
Ok, here's a question - there is a good chance that the Spine of the World, being as tall as they are, are caused by plate subduction. This could eventually cause volcanoes to form in one of the most chilling areas around...

Do you think that the effect on the environment would be as great as simple melting of the ice portrayed in the RotA trilogy?

Well, sometimes you have to cruise through the cities, low-ridin' your chariot, of course. Can't pick up the ladies with the portal

Chariot?
How primitive, that's what the Portal in the workroom is for, those fast getaways...
Kianna Posted - 09 Oct 2005 : 19:56:06
Well I think that when Neverwinter gets covered with ash and liquid hot magma at least I will be driving away in my chariot with lava-proof wheels!
Kuje Posted - 09 Oct 2005 : 16:38:58
Walks in and looks around before snapping his staff-whip, "Ahem! We seemed to have gotten away from Kossuth's fiery destruction and renewel. What's this talk about these chariots?"
Kianna Posted - 09 Oct 2005 : 16:21:51
But you know, if you are Pierce Brosnan you can drive over the lava with your vehicle (Dante's Peak). I so wish that in my former life as a geologist I had lava-proof tires on my truck.

Sorry, I`ve never heard of Tommy Lee Jones and I most definitely don`t see how he could stop a greater deity from torching candlekeep.

Wow, you mean you don't get any of our movies over there?

This should shed some light for ya: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000169/

As to him being able to stop this atrocity, given that Oghma is a Greater Deity also.....
