Sorry if this has been asked before.

Whilst reading a grand Tour of the Realms I discovered the following passage (pp11)

"Gnomes have no subrace, bust since the time of Troubles a different sort of Gnome has appeared in the Realms, coming primarily from the South. These gnomes are particularly interested in craft and artifice, including all manner of sciences and invention. This new breed of gnome is relatively rare, but counts among its numbers primarily younger gnomes who venerate the god Gond Wonderbringer (who resembles a gnome in their version of the faith)"

I'm sorry but this screams Krynn Tinker Gnome to me! Is there any further information concerning these gnomes? (If not I'd love to flesh them out a bit; perhaps they are Krynnish Gnomes who arrived on a spelljammer or through planar travel. Heck a disastrous malfunction could have sent them here).

I must admit a fondness towards Gnomes; I enjoy playing one of the inquisitive buggers. I'd even like to see a small family of gnomes flying around in a crude (and very volatile) Zeppelin (Hot air Balloon ship anyone?). This would definitely be useless in a battle and would probably be extremely dangerous but heck it would be fun. Of course I'm just talking about one of these monstrosities, I really doubt they’d ever take on (plus try finding someone insane enough to pilot one!)

Well, there was one particular Krynnish tinker gnome who combined the arts of illusion and tinkering so well that most common people could not tell the difference -- but his illusions were later dispelled by a wandering Red Robe.

That's exactly right.

I think that what a lot of people don't realise is that the inventions of Krynnish tinker gnomes are only unreliable for the most part... on Krynn. It is because of their relationship with Reorx (the so-called God of the Forge) and the fact that they are "the original strain of gnomes" that the Curse of Reorx affects them.

It is well known that the minoi (tinker gnomes) lack almost all forms of common sense as well as the fact that they cannot control their inventive urges when it comes to crafting wondrous creations. But it's still a god-based curse... tied intimately to Krynn.

At least, this is how it would be in 3e.

This is one of the things that bother me a little.

We know that what the original poster is asking about is the Gond worshiping gnomes from Lantan.

The quote, and other mentions in other books, tends to say Gnomes only came to Gond After the ToT (referring to them as a "new breed").

This is contradicted, sort of, by the reference of the The Great Spire of the Ice Sea in the Hoard set, where it claims the these gond worshiping gnomes have been there for at least decades.
EDIT: Re reading the Great Spire entry, it looks like the Gnomes have been there several centuries.
The Hoard was barely one decade later then the ToT.

I have come to rectify it by saying these Gnomes always worshiped Gond, it is just that they haven't traveled much.
It still feels wrong to me somehow.

Ya I see what you mean; two plus two does not equal five! Any chance the gnomes built a time device?

So? The FR lore shows, repeatedly, that the inventions made by gnomes in FR work, more then they do with the inventions made by the tinker gnomes of Dragonlance.

Not a nice thing to say about your "Masters" oh great Space Hamster

Know you not the lore of Wooly Rupert? Tinker gnomes all over Known Space fear him! From the first Spelljammer Monstrous Compendium:

Giant Space Hamster of Ill Omen: This possibly legendary creature is an individual rumored to be of unusual size, even larger than a Tryannohamsterus Rex. "Wooly Rupert" (as he is known amoung gnomes) is also said to be highly intelligent and to possess spellcasting and spelljamming powers. Tales say he is not well disposed toward gnomes of any sort, preferring to squash them with his titanic paws. Gnomes everywhere fear the wrath of Wooly Rupert, though they laugh nervously and claim otherwise.

Note: a Tyrannohamsterus Rex is 25' at the shoulder, and has 16 HD.

And Ed once commented:

quote:
Re. space hamsters and Wooly Rupert’s response: “Let me guess, they're actually extradimensional beings making amazingly subtle experiments on humans, right?”
To this, Elminster replies, “Indeed. And that should lead ye to readily accept this advice of mine, freely given ye: don’t breed with them, no matter what they offer ye. Just don’t.”
What he had to say about tinker gnomes I won’t pass on, even in this broadminded and tolerant forum. :}
