I have and ideal and I was wondering if this could work. Every one nows that most dragons collect treasure and other items. But I was wondering if I could set up an adventure about a red dragon that was slain in its lair. But the dragon didn't just die but with its love of its treasure so strong thats its essence was infused into the treasure that it loved so much. So that the coins, armor, and other parts of its treasure took on the apperance of the dragon. The dragon then kills its killers and waits to this day in its layer trying to protect its horde of gold.

I would like some input on this idea and keep in mind that it is just an idea.

That a really good ideal having it regenerate with the adition of coins to it. But I could take it one step farther instead of attacking with the force of coins as stumps. I could somehow have magical swords or other weapons act as the dragons claws and I can make the skin out of shields and armor or whatever streasure thats large enough to act as a part. Then the adventer that wants to kill it would have to break the claw weapons and dagger teath to disarm its true weapons. Or pierce its tough hide of armor and assorted items to release its blood, the coins and gems that make up the dragon internaly. As the dragon looses more streasure it gets weaker because it has trouble holding itself together. But if given enough time the dragon can regenerate or put itself back together. Another way to kill the dragon would to have a wizard or a paladin try to turn it or to use acid or fire to desolve the treasure or to just melt it into a giant ball of gold and iron. But the ideal of a wizard being able to construct this dragon would be an abomination, the dragon would have to have the personality of a dead dragon and could be worked into an old campaign if your party killed a fiersome dragon and was trying to carry away its treasure, or somthing like that.

the coindragon from the Dragon article is CR 4, 18 hp, atk of +4 (1d6+2 tail or wing slap), DR of 10/+1, rsistances, construct, breath weapon of 1d8+2, and most energy resistances of 5. no SR.. so it isn't as bad as you might think or I had let on. It can be adjusted to party strength.

depending on the party strength, you can keep something like that for a low level group or bump it up to something of similar strength to a normal dragon.

It is your game, these are just ideas for something that would help achieve your goal of a baddie.

Ah, not so bad as I thought. I'm going to have to rummage around and find the coin dragon again this weekend.
I also like the idea of having the dragon be able to regenerate based on the size of the treasure horde. Perhaps a fast heal 3 or 6 that the players can get ahead of, but makes for a very irritating creature.

Make it worse... Make it regenerate hit points by absorbing coins from the hoard. The coins wouldn't actually be destroyed, but absorbed into the dragon. Essentially they could kill it but they would have to do damage to the dragon equal to the size of the hoard. (Which is only fair really.)

Sounds in general as a cool idea... I would love to see the final product when it is ready...

It's times like this that I wish there was a spell called:

Tenser's Floating Magnet

You can use something similar. The breath weapon would be of the impact of the coins, but would be relative in strength to what you had before. The coindragon had damage reduction, because the slashing and piercing weapons would pass through it causing little damage. Many spells would not work because it had no flesh and was similar to a golem. Load it up with spell resistance and some slam attacks and bammo! you got something.

Yikes! I'd say you had something....dead PC's.
"Your weapon doesn't seem to be affecting it. Take 64 points of damage as it slaps you contemptuously aside with a flick of its left arm. As you slam into the wall take another 18 points of damage, and when you hit the floor again you take another 4 points"
The following round....
"It shrugs off all of your spells, everyone make a reflex save as it sprays the area with coins, goblets, and candlesticks. If you make your save you have managed to find some cover and only take 38 points of damage, the rest of you were pummeled, beaten and cut by the sleeting metal taking 77 points of damage."

Can I reiterate...Yikes!
But hey...sounds like the sort of challenge I would love as a player. "I cry to my god and request aid in turning this fell spirit animating the horde. I promise that we will donate 50% to the temple if we survive."
But as a GM I just fear killing all of my players.

In a Dragon's Annual, immediately before 3.0 came out, there was an adventure that had a sword as part of the treasure. The sword created a coin dragon, that was composed of part of whatever hoard the sword was placed among. The idea was that it was a sword that could protect a PC's hoard.

The backstory of it is good, also. It would be something of a cross between a golem, dragon, and undead, since it's spirit has refused to move on.

Certainly it could work. Look at trying to combine the gold golem (from the WotC website) with a ghost dragon (from Monsters of Faerun) in some fashion (possession/malevolence perhaps?) from a rules perspective if you play third edition; I don't know much about second ed.
