Posted - 15 Apr 2005 : 17:39:32 I'm sure this has been asked before (sorry) but I did a search and couldn't seem to find what I needed.
I have read the avatar series and don't remember who (if anybody) took the assassins portfolio when Bhaal was killed?
I know Cyric/Mask killed him but I don't really know who would have the portfolio. In all 3E material neither of them have assassins as their portfolio. Cyric has murder but I don't think it's the same thing.

Okay, since all the assassins that actually worshipped a god with the assassin portfolio died out, then that portfolio was probably not getting much use for a time.
I still think that Cyric either got the portfolio from Bhaal, or if not claimed it at first went back and claimed it after new assassins started cropping up to fill the niche left by the dead ones.
I can't imagine that Cyric would just leave a portfolio lying around unclaimed that he would have every right to claim. He is a greedy and powerhungy fellow, and would surely claim it just as soon as it came to his attention that it was available. |

I seem to recall reading or hearing a humerous tale on how R.A. Salvatore managed to spare Artemis. Apparently his line of rationale when told he'd have to kill Artemis because of the ToT events was along the lines of: "He's not an assassin. He's just a fighter who kills for a living." Or something like that.
That might be, but does it matter now? As I said the FRCS says only Bhaal worshipping assassins were killed. :) |

Not true. Artemis is still around, as were others. :) AND the FRCS says only those assassins that worshipped Bhaal were slain, not EVERY assassin in Toril like it was in the old material.
It was like that in the old material because assassins were a core class and TSR had to find a way to write them out from the switch from 1e to 2e. |

Posted - 16 Apr 2005 : 05:09:33 I've always found it difficult to believe that ALL assassins were killed during the calamity of the Time of Troubles. There may have been "retired" assassins, or even reformed assassins who no longer practiced their "art". As such, the repopulation of assassins in the Realms immediately after the ToT wouldn't have taken as long traditionlly because there would likely have been those who were finding themselves drawn to the ways of the assassin and seeking out these retired and reformed "masters".
Granted, these masters might have been a little cautious about taking up their art again after what happened to assassins during the ToT, but for the right amount of gold, some humanoids, will do "anything".

But all the assassins were killed during the time of troubles.
Maybe for the few years that assassination wasn't being practiced as an art in the Realms, it was not necessary for Cyric to emphasize that he had assassination. But I think he does have it, I think it is a subset of murder.
Now that a few years have passed and new assassins have trained themselves, filled the niche and grown into the role, I bet you that assassins are already turning to Cyric as their patron. It only seems natural for assassins to say a prayer to Cyric to help them complete their asssigned tasks. |

Well assassin's and murder do go hand in hand. Assassination is murdering so yeah! |

Posted - 16 Apr 2005 : 00:52:40 Speaking of Shar, what do people think about her becoming a the god of assassins? After all, the monk PrC that follow her are assassin-like. She didn't have anything to do with the death of Bhaal but she is certainly clever enough to smuggle the portfolio out from under the others noses (see Shar's ability to be sneaky with Shadow Weave). |

I agree that Mask would be a good pick for this portfolio, do you think the acquisition of this portfolio would be enough to lift Mask to a higher rank (ie. greater deity)? Are there that many assassins?

Good question. How many followers would he have to gain to make the jump? I'm away from my sources right now.
Well, I really don´t like if this happen... We already have too many great bad gods in the spot (Shar, Bane, Cyric). To put on more in the cauldron will made the thing stay very very tempered (red hot chilly peppers?!?) |

Exactly, after all the merchant isn't conducting an assassination. He's just doing something all the husbands on here have thought of at one time.

I definitely don't think murder and assassins is the same thing. As Sirius said, a merchant killing his wife in an argument is not an assassination. Also, a hired assassin being paid to assassinate the head of an enemy organization or opposing country isn't necessarily a murder (murder is an unlawful killing, law as in governmental rules, not game mechanics).

So, if I'm a Waterdeep merchant that kills my wife in an argument, I'm an assassin?
Maybe I phrased myself wrong. They are closely related. BTW, I don`t think it counts as murder if you kill someone rashly. I don`t know the proper term in english, but in swedish it only counts as murder if you planned it. Otherwise it`s dråp(don`t know the english word) |

No. It's not the same thing. I believe kuje is right, that it is unclaimed. As for my opinion, I always thought Mask was a good fit to have assassins in his portfolio. |

Demihuman Deities lists assassins under her portfolio. However, I always took that to mean dark elves not assassins from other races.
