Posted - 10 Jan 2005 : 09:05:55 if power of the gods are determined by the number of their followers then there is no meaning of having more than one crowns(like cyric does)
which i mean: all farmers worship Chauntea (which means about 31% of all Toril) which makes her the greatest power, in the other hand, Tyr doesn't have that much paladins for his cause(there are paladins for Mystra, Helm or Illmater) does that make him a lesser-Greater power?
any ideas?? |

Divine rank, like player character levels, is divided into 20 ranks.
1-5 divine ranks is a demigod 6-10 divine ranks is a lesser deity 11-15 divine ranks is an intermediate deity 16-20 is a greater deity
Then there is an overgod who has 21+ divine ranks (sort of an Epic level god)
And then there is also Divine Rank of 0, which is not the same as no divine ranking, and DR zero gives you certain godly abilities that classifies you in the "quasi-deity" category.
See Deities and Demigods for information about what each of these ranks will get you in terms of stats and divine salient abilities.
But it is correct to say that some greater gods are greater than others.
eheheh after my reply i read it on the v3.5 book thanks anyway
but the divinities were unfamiliar did they change the priest domains completely(there was madness etc.) |

Hehe. Maybe, but really, some things are so absurb that the only place you'll ever find them is in the real world. |

Divine Rank was introduced in Deities and Demigods. A quote from a review of this tome explains the term:
quote:
The concept of Divine Rank is tricky. In some respects it's a useful and easy measure of how strong a god is - this is especially handy if you tie belief in the god into his or her strength. On the other hand Divine Rank means you can say stupid things like, "Thor is more divine than Poseidon."

what's the divine rank thing?(after i read your replies i believe it exists both within the classes of gods, and between the classes of gods)
and what are exactly the gameplay stats for example: a greater power may give his/her cleric a 9th level spell, whereas a lesser power can't??? is that what is meant by the gameplay stats
anyway if its that unimportant i will neglect it |

1) Ignore all gameplay stats relating to the gods themselves.
I use that rule for all deities across every setting I campaign in. Giving the powers stats is almost as bad as statting the Lady of Pain . . .

My home rules for my campaign is its not just numbers but quality, in game terms the more levels a worshiper has the more worth he is to the Deity the 20+ level Elminster is worth more to Mystra than a 1st level commoner farmer is to Chauntea. In addition a Cleric is worth more than any other character even of the same level as they are more devote and the instrument by which Deities gain more worshipers ie preaching
In chess terms a 1st level Commoner is a pawn, a Cleric is Bishop (Pardon the pun)
True but even a pawn can take down the king
its called a critical hit |

Posted - 10 Jan 2005 : 10:08:07 Well there are different "farming" poweres around as well. Remember that they prey to different gods in Maztica and Kara Tur, even in Faerūn itself there are other phanteons to pray to for the different races. That said Chauntea are one of the deities in the Faerūnian phanteon with the highest devine rank I think it is 19 or something and the closest ones after that are like Mystra, and some others on 18. It all much more or less comes down to their devine rank at least in my money pouch. |
