Posted - 04 Dec 2004 : 07:36:23 The story about the revisions to Deities & Demigods is slightly different and more interesting than you might think. The real story can be read here on Michael Moorcocks website: http://www.multiverse.org/content-43.html
But the gist of it is that TSR did have the right to use the 2 mythoi--the Cthulhu Mythos had been in the public domain and TSR actually got permission from Michael Moorcock to use the Melnibonean mythos. However, Chaosium Inc. had purchased licenses from Arkham House and Moorcock to make Cthulhu & Elric RPG's and objected to TSR's use of the 2 Mythoi in the 1st printing but consented to their continued use after TSR agreed to put a disclaimer in the preface of the 2nd printing stating that TSR thanked Chaosium for permission to use the 2 mythoi.
The guys running TSR at the time were so galled at having agreed to thank their competitor in print that they deleted the 2 Mythoi from later editions so as to avoid the issue of acknowledging them.
Irony of ironies, the editors actually forgot to delete the actual acknowledgement from the preface so that they ended up not only not printing material that they had the right and permission to use but continued to thank their competitor for the stuff they weren't even using through the 3rd & 4th printings.
By the way, Mr. Moorcock has graciously made the deleted Melnibonean mythos material from Deities & Demigods available for view on his website. You should go and check it out! The art is pretty wonderful! Click on the links here: http://www.multiverse.org/content-45.html and here: http://www.multiverse.org/content-46.html |

That's what I heard, and no one has ever corrected me on it...

I got that they got sued over something dealing with Deities and Demigods (That is a book I would love to have, old school there babby!) in particular? Like lets say they used a god or something that was copyrighted, something liek that?
I have all of the hard cover books from 1st and 2nd edition... I lucked into both versions of the DDG.
Anyway, what Kuje31 said is correct. They did not have permission to print the pantheons from Cthulhu and Melni-whatever (Elric, by Michael Moorcock, and I can't spell the name of the world), but they did anyway... They were sued, and so later editions of the DDG didn't have those two pantheons in them. I don't know if they did that without a judge's orders, to be nice, or if they lost the lawsuit, or what... I also don't know (but I am curious) about what happened with the copies of the DDG that were sitting on the shelves in stores when all this happened. Did they have to recall them, or did they just not make more, or what? I am curious about this one... |

I ordered from them several years back. I never had any problems although I felt at the time he was a bit pricey.
And he got you're money anyways!!! ;)! Lol!
I am not creating a campaign. What I am doing is trying to read these that have Deities in them so I build upon all my own and learn how to put what type of a deity with maybe what species. I'm building my world and trying to take ideas and morph them and create my own ideas. I've been on a Deity-Naming rampage the last few days so I've been trying to look down books.
What is this "lawsuit" that was spoken of? |

If you ever wish to go the D20 route for ideas, inspiration, or for possible gods to include in your own campaign, take a look at the highly praised Green Ronin publication, The Book of the Righteous.

Edit: Sirus, Noble's prices where actually preety good I would imagine. Anywhere from 8-12.00's on these books. Little more for the Mint ones but I'd prefer to take the lesser of the two just in case. Then again I woul dlike to have Mint books just to have...
Those are good prices. Glad you were able to find them and thanks for the information.

I managed to find Faiths & Avatars, Powers & Pantheons, Demihuman Deities, and Monster Mythology (For the "Rarer" Deities, such as Faerie Deities.) but I could NOT find Prayers from the Faithful at Noble.

Well, they're not Realms-specific, but there are the old Legends & Lore and Deities & Demigods books... Though, as I recall, Legends & Lore is just a reprint of the second (post-lawsuit) version of the DDG.
However, since a couple of Realms deities appear to have migrated from Earth, you can use those books to see some non-Realms specific info on deities such as Mielikki, Loviatar, Silvanus, Oghma, and a couple others... |

These are for my self. Someone special...HA! lol.
But I prefer the actual product then an online thing. It just feels more right and better actually holding it then being in the faint blue glow of you're monitor.
The most special person of all?
I agree with you about print over electronic. For my essential tomes, I need the item to be in my hand.
If you do find them let me know how much they cost you. I'm very curious as to the price for these OOP FR items. |

Nobleknight.com is the one I've used for years. Aaron has gotten way to much of my money from the vast amount of FR/Planescape/Spelljammer lore I've bought from him. :) I've never had any problems with him either, which is why I recommend his site.
A second recommendation for NobleKnight. I haven't purchased from the company in years. However, I never had any problems with any purchase unlike some competitors. |

Am I right that you're interested in the actual print product rather than an electronic download?
