I was just wondering if the idea of a feature length film has ever come up? I think the CGI is advanced enough at this point that almost anything can be pulled off on screen. The only real problem is getting enough information into the film or films to get nonForgotten Realms readers to understand what is going on. I see this as simular problems with Star Wars, and Lord Of The Rings, but it was done very well.
I am just wondering if the idea had ever been chewed on or not? |

Who do you think we are, Pixar?  We use LEGOs whenever possible, adding in clay or other substances, and only using computers as a last resort. It's faster and usually looks better. |

I am downloading your film. I checked out the preview and it looks great. Have you seen the final fantasy movie? it is all in CGI I think that would be a big part of any FR movie. If you could get someone that knows poser5 or one of the other 3D renedering programs your team would be set. |

By the way, Arivia, if you want Planescape, give me some ideas; I know very little about it, but I'd like to write one.
On the other hand, our SFX Guy says he doesn't much like the bluescreening process . . . apparently it's much harder than overlays. Stands to reason, I guess. Point is, I wonder how much of a Planescape would depend on such things? |

And there're at least two people connected with Leftfield Studios (an amateur stop-motion filming group) interested in doing something dealing with D&D -- myself being one of them. (For the feature-length Star Wars parody we made, click on the link in my signature.)
The only problem is getting a plot that will interest the rest of the group. There are many members, but mainly four: the camera man/director/set man, the SFX/producer, the primary voice man, and me, whose job is more nebulous. (I'm idea/writer/piece supplier, but we all do that, so I can't claim a monopoly.) It's the voice man and I who are interested in it; the other two (and all the others connected to the group) say they'll consider it if we have a strong script. Obviously, we need our camera and SFX guys fully behind this.
Currently, three of the named four are busy with university work, so we'll also have the problem of time. It took us sixteen months to do our 75-minute movie, and while we could do that in less time now, I wouldn't count on much more. |

Well at least the interest is still out there.
As others have said Ironbug, there has been much discussion on this subject including some people who may have been willing to start to make their own film. However, what with copywrite and all, this would have to be not for profit and a labour of love.

Thanks for all the response. I can't wait for one to be done. The Forgotten Realms would be difficult because of the scale of the world and the many different storylines. I have always thought that the easiest setting for a film series would be Dragon Lance. If you could pull off the Forgotten Realms though it would be an awesome film no matter which novel was done.
I thought that the Dungeons & Dragons film that was done was an embarrassment to the gaming system and everyone that plays or reads any of the world settings.

Like wooly says, this has indeed been discussed over and over again.
Just to bring you up to date:-
There was originally a FR TV show planned by Fireworks Entertainment (the folks who made shows like Herc, Xena) but then nothing came of that and the option expired.
Since that time there have been a few stalled attempts to bring FR to the silver screen.
Hasbro and the Entertainment Production company they are working with are trying to get FR onto the screen.
"Dungeons & Dragons: D&D (owned by Wizards of the Coast) is the bestselling roleplaying game of all time, and it has a multitude of amazing and diverse worlds in which to play, including Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Ravenloft, Dark Sun, Eberron, Savage Coast, Maztica, Planescape, Birthright, and Al Qadim, among others. Critical Hits is working hard to launch each and every one of these properties into film, television, and/or video entertainment." - Quoted from Critical Hits website.
The hardest part of a project like this is to get studios interested in making another Fantasy film that will be up to the standard of LotR.
