Posted - 12 Sep 2004 : 06:58:41 How fast does news travel in Faerun? Sending spells (and similar) aren't very common, but is it unusual for a mage to regularly correspond with a colleague, or one temple to another of the same faith, say every day or two? For example, if something of note occurs in Waterdeep, does the news reach Silverymoon within a day or so? |

As for using mercenary companies etc. this would be much like chinese whispers and news would likely get distorted and exagerated whilst it speads... which can make things quite interesting |

Sending word temple to temple, through pilgrim carried letters, and favors(usually in return for healing) from minor adventurers and travellers.(Rare is the person willing to snub a god by chucking a missive in the campfire) |

Spreading the news was, historically, the domain of the Bard (either through song or story telling). In many cases, the bard's main means of support was a small crowd gathering when he/she arrived at a village.
This would suggest that, apart from magical means, news travels at the speed of the person carrying it. If no-one travels to a small village, the news won't arrive there.
I've always used these guidelines for Faerun and they've worked.

Well depend entirely on the scale of the news. In the novel Elminster in Hell, when one of the mages discovered that El was captive all the high mages and Mystra found out within a few hours. |
