Does anyone else use the option for 1st level dual-classing from page 40 in the 3e DMG? Just wondering.

Yes I did... it was in Mumadar's Silver Marches Campaign which has since died out and I was lucky enough to make it into Twilight Dawn.

Anyway Tarim's stats are here if you wish to look at them.

The concept for the character is basically a uniquely gifted mage who not only pursues magic on an intellectual level but on a spiritual one as well. He's incredibly vulnerable but also a magical powerhouse for his level. Hopefully he'll be able to enter into the clergy of Mystra at some point soon and then he'll be on his way to becoming either a Dweomerkeeper or a Mystic Theurge.(or both)

In a home campaign I am in, I decided that it fit my character well to start 1/2-1/2 as a first level human female. We are playing in Cormyr, about a year and a half after the fall of Azoun. We started in the militia and have just been relieved of duty now that a new class of Purple Dragons have graduated.

Since my life was stopped in mid stride by the war in Cormyr, (I was attending a famous bardic college of music in Suzail when word of my fathers death reached my ears.) Since he was a war wizard, I decided that I would follow my fathers quest to defend Cormyr. I left the college and went to war with the militia.

There I became my part wizard. so I was 1/2 bard-1/2 wiz. But my father had taught me stuff way before I went to the college, so it was just natural to start learning magic from the resident Warwizard that accompanied our little group of militia men. Being the daughter of a warwizard, the one with us helped me to learn and there you go.

I only used it because it fit so well with my character concept. But I am now 2nd level, so I am a 1/1 wizard bard. The first level was bizarre, with only cantrips to cast except a few bonus wizard spells from specializing and having a high intel. It was alright.

Seluus.

Give me a good background for your character and I'll allow just about anything. I consider rules very secondary to a good story.

That's how I look at it.

Never had much reason to.

I do like the gestalt character system from Unearthed Arcana, which I've used a few times.

I've thought about introducing this concept into my games from time to time, but I rather prefer that all characters begin as single class PCs.

I know that Artalis did for one of his characters. Or at least that's the impression I got from the background he wrote -- I got in the game when he'd reached second level.
