I have ponderd this for a while. Since the Time of Troubles Ao decreed the gods power will grow as their worshipers grow. But what I don't get is what does having more worshipers increase their strenght divine protection or their magical powers. Because when people say so and so power increased do they mean influence or raw strenght and divine magic.

Belief is power.

A deity draws most of it's divine power from the faith of it's worshippers. Should the number of worshippers increase, or the church experience a sudden influx of converts, the deity will likely receive a boost in overall power, but that power is always tied to belief. It's almost an abstract concept.

It will likely have little effect on the deity's status, or position within the celestial hierarchy, but it will have an influence on the deity's raw strength, and the potency of the divine magic it allows for the casting of spells.

Of course, this is all based off of some very old information. I'm not entirely sure how it works in 3e.
