I am in not-so-grave need of a scroll of well-balanced, interesting, and original presteige classes. Does anyone know where this tome would be located?

Yeah, first thing I thought of is that he should have a few levels in commoner or expert given that background.

Eldirato is 464 years old and yet he is a low level character... Can you explain this?
OrnluTheWolf Posted - 03 Jun 2004 : 13:25:40
Alright, here's my character idea: Eldirato is a 464 year old, low class moon elf in Evermeet. He has been a librarian (not even a high ranking one) for the last 4 centuries, and he has learned much in his service and also discovered a huge love of magic. His two loves in life are nature and magic. One day, he discovers a tome detailing a vast treasure hoard, loaded with magic items, including a book that will teach anyone to cast spells. The tome is hidden in the tomb of (insert DM's choice here). So, he asks the head Librarian, an elf of noble birth, to teach him a few cantrips and he sets off.

Otherwise, it's a great site for ideas, at the very least. A browse through the class/prestige class sections will give a player plenty of ideas for character concepts that can be wrangled even just with regular D&D items. Especially if the DM allows for customizing in the spirit of what is laid out in the PHB.

You know that is a wonderful point. I've often thought the best thing about Prestige Classes is it might stimulate character ideas for a player. Sadly, it seems too many players are simply interested in the number crunching. Alas, that just might be a misconception I am getting from too many online forums.

Well, the guy(s) who run(s) the site is/are pretty good about marking them as unbalanced if they are, but usually only the biggest ones are caught. The ones sent in on good faith, but have errors that give underbalanced bonuses, are always missed.

It's usually pretty obvious which ones are the munckin items -- like the "Combat Artist" class. That one doesn't even follow the proper guidelines for the bonuses gained. It's really the "good faith" ones, as I mentioned, that you have to look out for. They're usually written as if assuming that everyone reading it is taking the spirit of the item's abilities, rather than just the letter of the law.

As it happens, I've just recently gone through that list. I found very little that can serve as a balanced PrC as-is, though most are done well enough that they need only a little tweaking to work. Many of the unbalancing factors are mistakes -- for instance, one has a power available once a day, but the author forgot to add a time limit, such as one round per level of the class.

Perhaps, Ornlu, you could tell us the type of PrC you're looking for?

Good point, that would help narrow the search.

Prestige Classes with errors and/or unbalanced? Whoa, color me stunned.

Here's one site I've encountered before. No idea on how original, well-balanced, or interesting the Prestige Classes are.

Well, there is also my revised duelist PrC... the Master of Defence.

Enjoy...

Here are a few:

The Imbuer

The Icemaiden of Auril-Related Scroll. A pair of notes-use the version in the main library, as a few other pieces have been added, such as conversion notes. Secondly, if you'll contact me over ethereal mail, then I can send you a copy of this in a variety of other formats, which may suit your needs better.

Hail and Well Met Ornlu!

While there is a scroll of the name Prestige Classes, there are only two such items discussed within its vellum. There are others scattered through the various recordings of numerous scribes in these halls. My suggestion is to use the junior page at the entrance of the hall.
