I've a question pertaining to the settling of Archendale. Even as late as 1356 D.R. (i.e., the beginning year of the original "Grey Box"), was Archendale already cleared of most - if not all - monsters? More specifically: is it possible to encounter Giant Crabs/Crayfish in the multitude of pools scattered within the gorge, or...have various heroic folk long-civilized the area by eliminating the gravest of wild threats, aquatic or otherwise?
(Why, yes, I have been thinking of The Stone Crab Coster.) |

Archendale maybe "best-defended" but is also small place.
Forest around Archendale is big place. Dark, scary. Many monsters live in forest. Sometimes monsters leave big place and go to small places.
I take your point, but, ah...what happened to the syntax? |

In 1356, Archendale was probably still teeming with wild creatures and not entirely safe. Those huge crustaceans were likely still abundant in those waterholes, so you could easily encounter them.

Posted - 22 Feb 2026 : 16:28:31 I brought this up because Archendale is right up there with Scardale as a "trading dale" (i.e., it boasts a large population to go with its well-developed landscape); plus, Archendale is noted as being "the wealthiest and best-defended Dale". Basically, my goal was to determine if the countryside and/or true wilderness (whatever remains, that is...) still posed a substantial risk to folk passing through. |

Posted - 22 Feb 2026 : 11:28:23 The Dalelands are not quite frontier wilderness regions, but they are by no means anywhere near the tamed lands of Cormyr and Sembia (which still have monster hotspots within their boundaries.
Within the towns i would expect monster incursions to be minor and rare. Outside those settlements you are taking a risk if you are on your own and unable to defend yourself. Not all monsters will seek to slaughter you on sight, but you may need to be wary about stumbling into their home, or putting on a show of force to deter any would be predators. |
